What's cleaning out shot? I read a post that said to take puppies the day after birth to have their tails docked and dew claws removed. Mom should also have a cleaning out shot. Then on another post, it said there are down sides to the cleaning out shot. What do you do? Cleaning out shot or not? What are the "down sides"? Also, what is a good length for the puppies' tails? I would rather know than leave it up to the vet. Porsche's tail is fairly short. Bentley's tail is longer. |
A POP shot causes the female to expel any afterbirth that she may have retained during the whelp. Females still contract to push this out after the birth of the pups. Many times after the birth of the last pup, the contractions cease and the female may retain it. A retained placenta will easily cause a serious infection. You will find mixed opinions on if the shot is needed or not. I personally have never had it given to my females. I kept track and made sure that all afterbirth was passed. However, I also had our vet come w/ sonar to examine shortly after whelp and she felt certain that there was no need for one. I have to be honest and say that I would heed the advice of some of the other breeders more experienced than myself in regards to this one. It's an aspect I am still rather sketchy and unsure of. |
Tails and declaws should be done at 3 -5 days depending on their weight gain not at 24 hours old, too much stress and can make them go down... The pop shot is a clean out shot, if you have any doubt about a remaining placenta even just a piece can create havoc and cause a major infection in the mom...better to be on the safe side...also the length of the tail is about 1/4" above the brown... hope this helps best of luck |

that would be perfect length.I had mine docked 1/4 into the black and they are too long looks like the whole tail so 1/4 above the brown would be the way to go |

unless you are talking about the other end of the tail. If you go 1/4 into the black from the tip wouldn't that be different? hahahaha. I also talked to may vet about bringing abby and puppies in after she has them for the cleaning out shot and checking the puppies and he said that he wouldn't unless there is a problem or I know that there was a retained placenta. That I could check the puppies to see if there was a problem. He said it was too stressful on the mom and pups. Also, I would be bringing them in at 3-5 days for the tails and dew claws. |

"the length of the tail is about 1/4" above the brown" above is the operative word |
