problems delivering one pup?? Brewser had xray today and only one puppy. My vet thinks although he is big, she should still be fine with natural delivery(they measured her pelvis-his head). He is also facing forwards(towards her head), vet says there is still time for him to turn around. Brewser only has about 5 days to go. Has anyone else had just one pup without problems?? Any thoughts?? --All the vets at the clinic gave me their home phone numbers, and all looked at her and xrays so they are familiar with her, should we have any problems!!:) ....maybe I sounded a bit too worried when I found out there was only one:confused: |

i agree with the above post. You need to be prepared for a C-section just in case. The minute she goes into labor, let your vet know. A single puppy can do a lot of growing in five days. good luck and congratulations!!!!! |

There are a couple of reasons a singleton litter can be a problem...One is the puppy has alot more room in utero to grow making birthing naturally sometimes impossible... Another problem with a singleton is that the mom may not ever go into second stage labor...Multiple puppies help to stimulate contractions... We have never successfully whelped a singleton litter naturally... All of them have been born by c-section... I would recommend that if in 5 days your girl is not in labor to go and have another set of xrays done to see how big the pup is getting...If there is any doubt as to whether she will be able to free whelp then as soon as labor starts call your vet and plan on doing a section..If the pup comes back feet first she may be able to deliver everything but the head and that is never a good situation!...Good luck and hope all goes smoothly! ~Laura |
because they tend to grow larger and turn every which way before being born. A large puppy turned sideways in the birth canal spells a c-section or death if not donee fairly quick. |
Thanks for sharing. I had done a lot of research on breeding as I had planned to have a litter this past summer before my girl became ill, and I had NEVER heard of that before. |

I live out of town and I am about 1/2 hr. from my vet, so I planned on if anything didn't feel right in the very beginning of labor to take her in right away....just in case. We had a singleton this past summer and although I was of course worried, we did take all the necessary precautions. Thank goodness that she was more long than chubby... and our Miss Lily delivered with no problems, or complications. Our Penelope gave birth to 6 puppies just a few days before, so we had the full spectrum with these two whelpings. All are fine and have gone on to their forever homes. :) Good luck and please keep us posted! |
I ahve had singleton pups also some free whelped and one had to have a section.Keep a good eye on her and your vet handy. |
One puppy litters and backwards is the worst scenario. I have had some deliver just fine and others deliver a dead puppy even though it was alive before. I have a new plan around here One puppy gets a section. I would rather have to pay the vet bill and have a live puppy then to deliver a dead one. Sometimes you get lucky and every thing goes like it should , but you are a half an hour from your vet , that could make the difference in life or death. I wish you lots of luck and I hope for your sake the puppy comes out on its own and it is well. |
Just curious....how much does Brewser weigh? If she is under 5 lbs then I would be a bit concerned. I have had several 1 pup litters over the years but only one needed a c-section and that was because it was a rather large pup and a 5 lb mom. In 10 years of breeding that is the only time I ever had to have a c-section done on one of my females. I sure wish you the best of luck. |
