Is she going to whelp in my bed???? What am I doing wrong?? Brewser is 52 days along and has been staying in her whelping box, which is right beside my bed. I have had to sleep on the floor beside her to accomplish this but she was doing good. But the past couple of nights she gets up and goes to my bed, leaving me on the floor. Now this may be a mistake but yesterday I took the frame off of the bed, so that the bed is closer to the floor-hoping that she doesn't hurt herself jumping up, no jumping this close to due date, right??? Now I don't know what to do, she has slept in bed all her life, and I don't have a lot of time to change her mind. Has anyone ever had this problem??? |
My Chizziewink rarely chooses to sleep in bed, however she has chosen our bed as the perfect whelping box. I have moisture proof pads on our mattresses, so hubby and I found it quite an honor that she decided to ask to be put in bed, get under the covers and lay with her back next to hubby's leg to give birth. After the pups were born, she was perfectly content to raise her babies in the warm cozy box we had prepared. Some bitches are very opinionated about the perfect safe place to birth their pups. Good luck! Can't wait to see pics. |
I will add that Chizzie was not left unattended at any time during the birthing process and as each pup was born we made absolutely certain that they didn't squirm off the side. |
We whelp all of our litters on the bed. I have a very large wicker basket that I put on our bed and it is well lined. I assist all my mommas with their delivery. After the deliver is over I put them in their whelping box with a heat pad in a different bedroom. Will this be your first litter? Another big help is to use the disposable bed pads. I buy mine from Wal-mart and they work great for absorbing all the fluids. |
Maybe she is trying to get away from you?:p Seriously, if she is nesting and seeking out her 'quiet space,' she may do like many females and not want anyone around. It's possible that you are crowding her by being on the floor with her. I know you want to be close so that you can help her, but maybe you could use a baby monitor instead--that was she has her privacy, but you can still keep an ear our for what's going on.:) |
I am sure that if Destiny could have she would have had the pups in my bed. And she came close to it, it was a couple hours later that she started having pups but we were in the family room where her box was by then. |
Well, last October when Lexie had her pups she was in bed with us all night right before having her pups in the morning, while her whelping box lay empty right there in our room. Luckily, I woke up to her whining before she delivered, and even then rather than having them in her whelping box, she chose to have them in the basement family room on the floor in between the sofa and a relciner. Hey, whatever makes them most comfortable:D |
When my girls are close I let them sleep in my bed with me. If labor starts - you know it and have plenty of time to move them. I keep their whelping area ready for them. I just like to keep them close to me. I know when things are starting and always have plenty of time. :) Quote:
