x-ray or ultrasound??? Hi, I'm new to this forum but I was hoping there would be someone here that could help me. I have 3 yr. old yorkie and she is pregnant with her first litter of pups. I have talked to my vet and researched endlessly about what to do and how to prepare. The one thing that I still have a problem with is whether to x-ray or ultrasound to check the size and number of pups she is having. My vet said to x-ray her as the ultrasound cannot accurately determine the size and how many pups she is carrying. She is 50 days today and her next vet appointment(she is scheduled for an x-ray)is on her 56th day. I am very worried that a x-ray may harm her or her pups, if we shouldn't be exposed to it while pregnant how can they say it's safe for a dog?? Help!!! Opinions please....... |
I always x-ray 5 days before the due date. That way I will know if I will need to schedule a c-section or not and will know how many puppies to expect if I dont need a c-section. It does not hurt the mom or puppies. |
i recommend an x-ray. They do them all the time on pregnant dogs and i've yet to see any ill effects. |

I too do xrays, no harm to the mom nor the pups...your vet should not only do a puppy count but be able to tell you the position of the pups, how many in each horn...then he should take the diameter of the heads and then the pelvis of the mom, that gives you somewhat of a heads up if you might need a c-section. Remember though the pelvis will expand in labor...so usually not a lot to worry about unless you have an undersized mom or a singleton pup... all the best keep us posted |
Yep, xray is the way to go; as mentioned just a few days before due date. My Lexie had one with her litter...it correctly showed 4 puppies and told us their approx. size and ability to get through the birth canal. Lexie did give birth to 4 healthy puppies:D Congrats on your upcoming litter....keep us posted! Oh, and welcome to YT.:) |
Well, I havee ultrasounds at 28 days from the first tie. it has always been accurate EXCEPT this last litter. I was a little upset when they told me she had three because this mama always has five no matter who she is breed to. Lo and Beholdd, when she whelped, out came FIVE little fur balls. So I am guessing the two smaller ones were from the second tie two days later than the first and the ultrasound didn't pick them up. Sometimes I go for an x-ray a few days before and sometimes I don't. they can show as being perfectly lined up to whelp then turn or something during the process so I almost have come to the conclusion that if you know how many babies are supposed to come, there is not much point in that final X-Ray. my own vet won't even do them on pregnant moms and I have to go to an out of town vet. My vet believes it stresses the moms out too much. I have the ultrasound because I can't stand the not knowing. But, the later x-rays never did hurt my mama or babies and it is completely safe if you decide to do it. |
Thank you for all of your opinions, this is a great site! I feel much better about the xrays now. Is 56 days too early? Should I wait a few more days? |
X-rays are a great precaution if you dont know whats behind the yorkies that were bred. At least you will know in advance if the female will have trouble passing the puppies. Its not 100%, but I would rather be safe than sorry with an emergency call at 2 in the morning. |

Ultrasounds are usually only used to verify if the dog is prego..I would use an xray this late in the game. Good luck with everything!! |
