New to whelping...help! When I decided to breed my 4 yr old Porsche, I hadn't yet found this forum. What do I need to have on hand to help her should she need me? She is due around Jan. 14. Do you think it is necessary to xray to see how many puppies, etc.?:confused: |

Honestly you should have done your research WELL BEFORE the breeding took place. I'm sure there are people here that will help you if need be. You'll find alot of info here. Good luck to you and your girl. |
Hi, It's handy to have an xray for a count. Especially if you're inexperienced and this is your bitch's first litter. The count is an estimate and could be wrong by one (the vets usually say this) but for the most part you can know what to expect. It also helps with the pups sizes, being sure they are not too big to pass through. After 45 days is recommended for an xray, but if you want to see better I'd recommend 55 days. Good luck, Susan |
This is something you should have researched and prepared for BEFORE breeding your girl. But at this point, I'm sure you realize that, soo...moving right along....:) Start with this site: www.debbiejensen.com It is loaded with information that will help you. How big is your girl? What about the dogs that run in her line? What about the male she was bred to? How big was he and the dog that ran in his line? These will be very important factors to help you determine if she will be able to deliver naturally or if you will need to heavily consider the possibility of a c-section. Set up an appointment w/ your vet around day 50 of her pergnancy for an xray--this will give a good esitmate of the number of pups and will indicate to your vet if any of them appear to large for her to deliver naturally. Try your best to find a well seasoned breeder in your area that would be wiling to assist you during the whelp. (Even if you have to pay one!) A good place to start would be with the breeder you got your girl from? Maybe you could ask your vet to recommend one? Good luck! |
I would have her x-rayed 5 days before delivery date to see how many and to see if she can pass the puppies. Good luck!!!! |
Four years old is a bit mature for a first litter. Keep a very close eye on her and make sure that you have access to an emergency vet while she is in labor. I know a lady who bred her gal for the first time after she was 3 and her uterus ruptured. She was able to get to the vet immediately for an emergency c-section but lost 3 of the pups. The muscles have lost some elasticity by that age and it's harder for them to perform such a difficult task. Best advise, make good friends with your vet and find a mentor if you can. |
