I Don't Think That Lily Knows What to Do With Her New Pup! I am a little worried about Lily with her new pup. I have to get her to lay down and stay still so I can latch the pup on to feed. She sat on her a few times and also walked away from her so she could cuddle up next to me! The pup was crying too. The vet told me that Lily will chew off the cord on her own. I am tempted to cut it myself so she doesn't pull on it. |
4 Attachment(s) We ended up going to the vet for Lily to have her pup. She lost the first pup that she had and we were not positive if there was another in there. The vet delivered this one. There is a little over an inch of the umbilical cord still left on the pup. I am worried though that Lily will keep pulling on it. She wants to chew it off. Her first pup was born umbilical cord came out first followed by the tail and then the head. The pup never started I tried taking the pup and gently swinging it up and down in both hands to get it to breathe. I suctioned the mouth and nose. Nothing. I had the vet on the phone and he told me to give her to Lily. So I gave the pup to Lily to see if she could revive it. I let her chew off the umbilical cord. She chewed it pretty close too. After this I took Lily to the vet and she delivered the second one there. |
oh gosh hon, confine your mom in a small area where she cant get out if your having trouble (if you have a crate use that) mom needs to stay with the baby. she/he needs to stay warm and nurse at least every two hours as a newborn to survive.. |
I will try putting them together in a confined area like you said. I feel like I need to keep a close eye on her. |
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your first born pup and hope things turn out well for the second one. The pictures look as if mom is attending to the little one; maybe she will just take a little longer than usual to figure out what she's supposed to do. Wishing you and the new little family much luck and please do keep us posted. Congratulations! Yes...do keep a close eye on them to make sure mom stays attentive to the puppy, does not hurt it, or lay on it. |

I hope mom and baby are doing better. I too would keep her confined in a space she couldn't jump out of and have to stay with her pup. I don't know about the umbical cord. I'd ask the vet. |

I had Lily and pup,Holly, in a confined area in my room last night. I kept checking on her and by 3am the pup was feeding on its own. The pup seems alot stronger today. I still have them together, confined. Lily still tries to pick the pup up in her mouth and get it away from her. I am worried that she will hurt it. I don't want to get over involved in caring for Lily's baby. I am hoping that Lily will do what she needs to do. She is in my room barking for me right now. When I am around she seems to want to be with me and she goes away from her pup. I keep checking on them and take Lily out frequently to go potty, drink and eat. Lily doesn't seem to have a big appetite though.:aimeeyork |
The puppy sounds healthy. Some moms do need to be watched until the cord dries. Continue applying iodine (if you are). If not, this will make this process go by much more quickly. |
I am keeping a close eye on Lily. She seems to want to pick the pup up and take it somewhere. I haven't given her the chance to do it though to find out where she wants it. It crys when she picks it up. The pup is gaining weight well. In just one day she went from 3.5 oz. to 4 oz. The pup gets most of its food when I have Lily lying down next to me and I make Lily be still. Hopefully I will get a better night sleep tonight! I will if Lily lets her pup feed! :sleep: |
Some new moms need you to stay with them and MAKE them stay still to feed them. After a couple of days when her milk comes in really good, sh should get better. Sunshine is very attached to me too and I had to lay down with her to make her stay with the babies the first couple of days. Also, whenever she was out of the bed with them, I always covered the babies with a receiving blanket. It is VERY important that they stay warm at all times. |
