Do you think how much you feed affects .... how big puppies will be when they're born? I had never thought about it before, but the reason I ask is because my mom is a breeder (it's too early in the morning to call her first!) and she usually sets out self feeders for expecting mothers in the house because the rest of the day she is busy cleaning kennels, talking to people, etc., etc. She feeds her dogs Purina Pro Plan, but when I moved into my apartment with my husband, I switched my female, Glory to Royal Canin and follow the feeding instructions on the back. I give her one handful in the morning and one in the late afternoon. She is due to have puppies the first of January. So, my question is if a mother dog is expecting puppies, do you think that the amount given to them to eat will affect how much her puppies weigh? My mom has small Yorkies, but I know some of them pop out 7-8 oz. honkers. Maybe its just genes? But that was just something I was laying in bed thinking about. What do you think? |
question I think the number of puppies has a large effect on puppy size as a rule. One or two pups in a litter can be larger then a litter of 5 to 6...I do think we can overfeed a bitch and she will gain too much weight, often causing more difficulty whelping. The key is to feed a well balanced diet in several smaller meals per day as opposed to two large meals...I feed pregnant girl 4 times per day in the 6 to 9th week..dividing the same amount of calories in to the these 4 meals...it is more comfotable for the bitch and her digestion. I think over feeding the in the last week can add puppy weight in some bitches..others eat liek ROtties and have very tiny birth weight pups...that is why breeding is an art, not a science IMO.... |
I agree that it's more the number of puppies the mom is having, rather then the amount of food their eating. |
Okay, thanks for your opinion. I called my mom and that is what she said too ;) LOL. I didn't even think about the number of puppies .. that should have been a no brainer. I appreciate the feedback. |
