Getting Tails Docked and Dew Claws done....:( So Bellas pups are getting their tails docked and dew claws done on Saturday....im such a worrier....how much is it going to hurt the pups and are they going to be in significant pain? will i need to do anything extra for them? what do i need to get....i could just use some general info about this topic....i have read up on it, but they dont give much info on how to pamper the pups after to make them feel better haha |
tails Unfortunately, most vets cut and stitch and that method is painful. The clamp/twist method is quick, bloodless and the lesser of two evils...mine make a few squeaks and settle right down the minute they are back with mom...potential infection is zero, I find... |
Furgie still has her dew claws. Why do I need to remove them? And if I do than can I get them done when she has her spay? |
If she is older, it will be a more invasive procedure to get them removed, but i am sure they could do it while they spay her since she will be under anyway. |

If you were to do the tail and dewclaws at home how would you go about doing this. I have been worring about this also. Abby is due to have puppies on Jan. 10 or there abouts and was trying to decide if I would do it or take the puppies to the vet. When my corgi had puppies the breeder that I got the mom from came over and did the puppies. She use a rubber band on the tails and regular nail clippers on the dew claws. What is the best way to do this? |
If you have it done by a vet that knows what they are doing then their discomfort will be minimal. At just a few days old, the nerves in the tail, feet and ears have not yet begun to fully function and the sensation they will not be as bad as some imagine. Some of ours have never even woken up from their puppy nap while having it done. Mom may want to lick at the tails, my female never even acted like she noticed. Just make sure that she doesn't seem overly zealous in her efforts and that the site doesn't look irritated. It will scab overe quickly and should be fine.:) |
phew thanks for the info....i have been stressing about that all week! im a bit of a worrier....haha anyway im sure all will go well at the vet tomorrow! i hope! |
My Chis never had their dewclaws removed and it was a pain for me as well as them. Many times they would get the little claw caught on something and it would rip and bleed. I prefer having them removed at birth - so much safer and it looks neater too. |
When I got abby the breeder said the dewclaws were removed and they were on the back, but abby has them on the front also and they didn't remove them. I sure wished they did. Trying to remember to cut the nail etc.... is such a pain. I will have abby's puppies done and if they have them on the front and back they both will be removed. When I went to the vet they told me that dogs only had them on the back, and they were the only ones they remove, which is funny because abby has them on the front and so did my corgis. go figure:rolleyes: |
tails and dewies went fine today! the pups were quite vocal afterwards.....the most ive heard them since they have been born haha but they are all doing fine tonight....sleeping and nursing with mama! Now i cant wait for their little eyes open! yay! |
