Question about Kennel Name What does it mean if you buy a puppy and the breeder wants you to keep her kennel name at the beginning of the AKC name....for example "XXXXX's Sweet Baby Jane". Can anyone tell me why? |
It shows that the dog was a result of their breeding...even generations down the line. It's a common practice. No biggie, you can still pick your dog's name and call them that. |
It's to keep track of their lines. Just put your name after it. It's one a lot. |
Unless you are under a contract, you have no obligation to do that unless you want to. it does show your breeder respect tho. |
It also shows that the breeder is proud of what they have produced and want their name on it. It's nice to know that the person who knows your pup best wants to claim the breeding of it to all. |
Another thing to think about is if you show this dog, the breeders kennel name will be on it and nothing to indicate that the dog belongs to you and that you trained it unless you name it a certain way. For instance, my show girl is named Dee's Lil Diamond Jewel Theif. The Dee's Lil being me and the Diamond part because she came from Diamond/Diamondhead kennel. My breeder suggested that name. I had someone i bought a puppy from a year or so ago, try to pull a fast one on me , trying to make me use his "unregistered" kennel name by filling out the registration paper with his name on it. Since I planned on showing, I didn't want to do that. this person is a breeder and does not show. I called AKC, they looked it up and told me the kennel is not registered and to white it out and name the dog anything I wanted to. In shows, the winner dog always gets his breeder listed anyway but it is the name on the paper that really stands out. |

Our contract was revised due to her doing that our dogs will carry Prestigeous as the first part of the name. I am very proud of my dogs we produce and have worked very hard to get where we are. I know some breeders register the dogs then when they place them they know exactly the registered name. I really don't blame. The owners name is also listed in the show wins too. Deana Prestigeous |
kennel I have to defend the breeder who put their kennel name on the papers and it was whited out....why use your kennel name on a dog you did not breed? When I came into Yorkies I was told to put my kennel name at the end ...putting it first, meant I bred the dog... My prefix is Primrose..if I sold a dog to someone and put ..Primrose down, they can name the dog as they please..for example.. Primrose Lady at XXXXX (their kennel name) that means the dog was bred by me, but is owned by XXXXX.. This is JMO but I do not want my prefix at the beginning of any dog I did not breed.. But I guess it is apples and oranges, I always look to see who is the breeder, not the person on the end of the lead... |

I have to agree with Yorkie Rose on this one. The prefix should be the breeders and the use of at or of can be used to identify the owner. The difficulty is not in the training of the dog but in the producing of consistant quality. The breeder should be honored for that. |

Well, this person and I are friends and believe me, he does not people to know this dog came from his kennel. he hasn't turned out the way any of us thought and he didn't get at all upset with me about it so it has turned out alright. I had a contract on another breeder's dog (show breeder) and he was requiring me to use his kennel name, I had no problem at all with that. i ended up not getting the puppy tho because of an undescended testicle. |

I can imagine in most cases (without special circumstances) that would seriously make the breeder mad! |
I'm not sure how it works with dogs and AKC registration. I have my cat's CFA registration form in front of me (I need to send it in!) and it already has her breeder's cattery name in front of the boxes for me to write her name in. With cats and the CFA you don't have a choice but to have the cattery's name in front of it. |

If a dog that I breed goes into the ring or is bred I want my kennel name as it's prefix. I really goofed and let my son name Connor and he has no kennel name at all. Once they are pointed their names cannot be changed so my foundation has no kennel prefix. Now how sad is that! Live and learn!! |
kennel Registering your kennel prefix is almost never done in USA Yorkies, why bother giving AKC any more money..very common in Canada...they may require it, not sure??? |

I know. I just felt I needed to explain a little further to everyone. heck, there are times, I wish MY prefix name wasn't on this dog, if ya know what I mean:p |
name Dee...you hit it right on the head...if I "screw" up then I will take my licks, but if another breeder does, I don't want my name there..LOL |
Thank you for all your responses. This is the second female I bought from this breeder, whom I really respect. She has beautiful, healthy dogs. The first female I bought as a "pet", although she is really beautiful she is probably not "show quality". This second female has potential, but time will tell. I named the first female "Little Miss Mischief". This new female she wants her Kennel name first, so that's perfectly fine with me. Her name will be "Heavenly's Little Miss Attitude". I would like to keep the "Little Miss" or "Little Mr" in all MY names. I got her last night and she's just great. |
Yes, I too believe that if a breeder asks that the kennel name be a part of the registered name then you should do it. If, by chance it turns out to be of poor quality it shouldn't really make any difference as it should not be bred so therefore the kennel name won't matter, it will never be seen. (Another reason one should do a lot of research before purchasing a dog.) Breeders should get credit as they hold a much more important roll in producing a show dog. Compared to the work that goes into such breedings, training / handling is a piece of cake. |

In Canada, under our Canadian Kennel Club rules, we have to register and pay for the registration of any puppies whether we keep them or not. Most of my puppies are already registered with their registered names at the time that I place them. As the breeder, our kennel name must come first in the registered name. I can put the other kennel name of say the owner of the sire if I wish and indeed my Dandy Man has just that, he is Am/Can Ch. Loriben's Jenan Dandy Man Can with Jenan being the her kennel name and she is the owner of his sire. I finished his championship in Canada, she put is AKC championship on him. I would never expect to buy a dog from a well known reputable breeder that it wouldn't have their kennel name on the dog at the time I buy it. I never would buy a show dog less than about 8 mos old and it is already named. Every puppy or dog that leaves my home for a new home has my kennel name on it with the registered name already in place. It is my breeding. Anyone can give whatever call name they wish to any puppy they buy. SOme of the people that buy a puppy from me keep the call name, some don't. |
