grooming when pregnant Does anyone take their yorkies to a groomer? If so do you take them if they are pregnant? I usually take abby once a month as the groomer really cleans her hair and she stays looking nice much longer than when I bath her. They also cut her nail, which I hate to do as I cant see the quick. I am hoping that she is pregnant, and it is time to take her to the groomers, so am not sure if I should or not. |
grooming This is the exact reason I learned to be a groomer...you must learn to clip nails and do the basic's yourself...I do not allow mine in a grooming salon, pregnant or now...I know there are wonderful places, but I can't take any chances..some problems are not fixable.. |
We do expectant mothers all the time in our grooming shop , but you need to tell the groomer of her condition. We try to get the dogs done and out in a hour and not to stress them in any way. We hand dry them so not to put any pressure with a force dryer. Try to make your appointment on a slower day so there is not as much noise. Just make sure you talk to your groomer and be sure she understands your girls condition. When I hand the expectant mothers over to my bather I tell him to take very good care of the babies!!! And he does !! It's about trust, do you trust your groomer??? If not find a new one. Make sure the shop you go to is clean and does not smell, make sure there is no smoking allowed. Make sure there are no dogs allowed to visit each other. And make sure she will do your dog straight through for you so you can get her back home fast. grooming I used to go to breeders homes when needed for "special" care..can you find a mobile groomer? I do so agree, there are wonderful groomers, like to think of myself as one, but trying to find the right one with a pregnant girl is risky..I would rather start after she had puppies...unless you can drive to Best Friends in Oregon...! |
Thanks Pat , I am always surprised at the distance people drive to get to our shop....We really cater to the owners as well as the dogs and cats. I would not leave my dog at just any place to be groomed, I would have to stay and watch..... |
I think a mobile groomer might be a very good idea. |
Just remember , just because they come to your house does not make them a good groomer, you still need to watch and make sure they are being treated with care. |
gooooood post!! i had the exact same question about my girl Bella. She is expecting and due for her grooming visit as well, but in the end i decided i would wait until after her pups come. its not that i dont trust my groomer, but i dont want to stress her out! |

Thanks for the suggestions. I do trust my groomer, she has yorkies herself, but does stress abby out to go there. If she thinks that we are going to the groomers she starts shaking, but very happy when i pick her up. I think that I will do the grooming myself until puppies are born. It is just safer. You might be able to get your groomer to make a house call , I have done this too for special clients in need. You will have to pay a bit more but I am sure your little girl will like it. It never hurts to ask and it is not like she will have to do it all the time. |
What is a good shampoo to use on yorkies. The one that i am using now is bioderm, but by the afternoon abby looks stringy again. I usually shampoo twice and then a light cream rinse so she combs out easier. Any suggestions would be great. |
