Couple of questions for getting ready I was wanting to know about how soon to the due date do you get the welping box ready and introduce mommy to it? Also how many have had success with her having them there or she picks somewhere different? Anything else that could help I would appreciate it. :D |
I set my x=-pen up about a week before mommy is due. My whelping box is in the end of it. I have other dogs so I take mama out from them about three or four days before time so they won't hurt her. I have her pee pad, food and water all in there. I take her outside for fresh air all by herself. I set her over in the whelping box a few times during this time also. She will not stay in it BUT when it gets really close, like a day or so before, she starts getting into her box herself and spending more and more time there. She automatically knows what it is for. |
I would wait till it's pretty close to her due date. |
guess my dixie is spoiled rotton she wont eve have anything to do with it when she is delivering she goes in it before hand but until the puppies are there she is interested, i have to get platic and an old blanket and cover my bed she wants right up there with me where she normally is, but after puppies are born she will stay in there... again she just lets me know she is boss, and i dont want to upset her so i just cover and go for it |
I usually get my whelping box and supplies ready about 2 weeks before delivery. She is bathed and shaved at that time also before going into the whelping pen. She is kept separate from the other dogs and has her own potty place. I would rather have a confined place than have them whelp anywhere they choose and then having them drag the pups around if they want to move them to a new place. When they are in a whelping area, I can easily monitor the mom and pups several times per day and easily spot problems that may occur. Good luck!! |
Both of my females would not use the welping box but prefered my bed. I put blankets down over a plastic shower curtain for Mandy and then moved her to the welping box after the pups were all born. Krissy I moved after the first pup was born even though I knew she was in labor she got upset when I took her off the bed into the welping box.She went right back to my bed. I think it was a security thing. After the first puppy she was fine with the box. Four litters and all started on my bed!:2omg: They loved the box later...... |
Thanks guys for your help, I have showed it to her a couple of times and put her in it and walked away, she jumped out the first time after a few sec, but the next day when i put her in it she layed right down and took a nap, as for those of you whose dogs had them in your bed, she doesnt sleep in mine, but I think i need to keep close watch on my son's bed because she sleeps with him. Again, thanks and I will let you know how everything goes |
mine only used the whelping box after the delivery. they always try to hide under the beds or sofas to whelp. finally, i keep the bedrooms doors shut and we got new furniture they cannot get under. |
This is why I would recommend an inclosed area for her to whelp in. You can start by putting her in there a couple times a day to familiarize her with it. Put her in at night, especially when she's close. Mine is right next to the couch so I can sleep right by her when she's due. |
I get my whelping box ready 2 weeks before her due date. I have it set up in an x-pen where she has food, water, weewee pads and a few toys to snuggle with. I usually start putting her in there about 5 days prior to her due date. So far both my females have used their whelping box and they are great mom's. |
1-2 weeks prior to due date. W/ my females second litter, she went into hiding in the whelping box on her own. The second, I found her hanging around the spot between my bed and night stand:eek: , moved her into the whelping area (different area) and after about an hour she settled in and stayed there on her own. |
I bring it out 1 week prior to whelping... Mine love it. When they first see it they jump and then have to roll around in all the blankets. It's sight to see. |
I would also put it in an enclosed area,usually about 4 or 5 days b4 she is due,I usually put a quilt blanket in her bed for the last few days as they find it hard to get comfortable and the extra padding helps but I usually take it out prior to whelping and put in a blanket or towels and newspaper,they like to scratch at the bedding and towels and newspaper are good for this and after each pup is born you can change paper and put in clean paper,best of luck and hope all goes well |
