silky coat I have a question about coats. If you breed 2 silky coated dogs together do you get all silky coat puppies? And to get cotton coat you breed a cotton and silk together? And can a cotton coat and silky coat have cotton coats and silky coats in the same litter???? lol Hope you understand what Im saying. Thanks:rolleyes: |
Just my own experience but I have bred kandy and Ceeby who are both silky coated twice and gotten two litters of five each. The first litter was all silk and are now over a year old. This litter looks like it is going to be the same. On the other hand, I have bred ceeby (silky) to Frankie (modified cotton) and gotten about half and half. I can't speak for others tho. |
So if you breed 2 silkys together you shouldnt get any cotton coats in that litter? |

I would think you'd have to research back through the lines to see if there were any cottony's. You never know what was in past generations. |
coats You can not look at one generation..(parents) It is quite common for offspring to take traits from grandparents...that is why a pup can have a bad bite from two good bite parents...etc. If you have silk grandparents and parents, the odds of anything but silk is slim, but possible in a small percent. Breeding a silk parent and soft parent will result in some of each..and the puppies will each carry silk and soft genes..what they are bred with has a big impact on the breeding programs future...you can impact it by going to the soft or silk offspring.. BUT you would not breed to intentionally produce a cotton coat, it was just a question asked out of curiosity, correct? |

coats Soft coats can be finished...but we strive for silk. The judge, judges the entire Yorkie, but just the coat... Yes, I can tell at 12/16 wks whether the coat will be silk or cotton..most long time breeders can..it is not magic. |
Can you tell us the secret ? smile |
The next yorkie I get I want a thick silk coat. My yorkie now must be modified silk. Her hair is thin and it just dont grow. The back end of her looks like a minpin, just when I think it is growing back there it comes out again. From the middle of her back up to her head it grows 2 inches and then comes out, breaks off or something. She is 1 year and 4 months, 3 and half pounds. Love her just the way she is... just next time I want a hairy silk coat yorkie lol |
coat The coat sounds more wiry then modified...soft/cotton/modified as a rule are quite thick and grown in abundance. A coarser coat tends to break rather then grow... The Yorkie club of the Nations Capitol used to have a fun match in Janurary, a few weeks before NY...I have been in FLorida for 3 yrs so I do not know what is going on in 08..but you can contact Mary Trimble...get number from YTCA. There are many good shows in the Va area also..some bring puppies..you have to make it known you want to learn what is correct.. As to the fun match, many used to bring puppies of all ages, some to socialize, others to show..ages start at 3 months for a fun match...it is a good way to see puppies close up and learn about coats. There are no secrets, it is simply a hands on thing you learn from looking and feeling dozens of coats...looking at the parents, line, puppy...only so much can be learned from forums, books or photos...you have to see actual color and feel texture...best wishes |
Thank you yorkierose |
