How do I keep a male from humping a female Ok I am in search right now for a Female yorkie and I am on a waiting list for one which I wouldn't get till April but anyhoo....I know once I get my female Bailey will go NUTS!!!! I definetly don't want to have an accidental pregnancy so what do I do??? Do I keep a belly band on Bailey and a diaper on my lil girl...When can a my girl yorkie actually get pregnant?? I know its when she gets in heat but when does that usually happen?? And will Bailey always try to hump my female yorkie??? or Will it be a phase? |

I don't know how old this girl is going to be..but, they do have Seasons. When she comes into Season...you'll have to keep them completely seperated. My suggestion is to read everything you can about breeding, whelping, etc. If breeding is your plan...you need to study everything you can. You never breed a female yorkie before their 2nd cycle or 18 months of age. What would be the best thing to do is spay/nueter....You're questions are very basic ones that most every breeder would know before they ever planning to breed. |
Belly Bands & Diapers I just wanted to express my experience with the belly bands for male yorkies and diapers for females. To put it simply, they are not reliable! Male dogs, at least our male yorkie, are very creative. They will find a way to slip out of it and get passed the diaper on the female. The best way to prevent it is to have them separated. Also, they can tie in a matter of seconds, so never leave them alone unattended. Anyways, good luck! |
The best thing to do is neuter your male and have your female spayed before 6 months of age |
If you're not planning on breeding, then neuter that boy now. Then you won't risk an "oops" before you can have your female spayed. If you have him neutered early, he may never try to hump her. If he's older and his hormones have kicked in he might. Some do it as a dominance thing regardless of wether the female is in heat or not. If you are planning on breeding then, like Mardelin said, you will have to keep them separated until she is old enough to breed. |
Yep I would have to agree the only way to prevent the humping would be to neuter him.. Dawn |
i have six adult yorkies, two of them are males. They NEVER hump the girls or anything else unless one is in heat or coming in heat. At that time, the only way to prevent it is separating them. |

Are you planning on breeding someday? If not I'd get my male neutered. I'd think if they wanted to get togther diapers and belly bands wouldn't stand in the way. |

It is in phases like others have said, but when my female is in heat, our male goes crazy...even if we have them in separate rooms (and separate floors) he will cry for hours and hours and keep scratching at the door. We are pretty much forced to send one of them away on vacation to live with "grandma and grandpa" for a few weeks just to get any sleep. The female will usually start humping stuff and her vulva will enlarge to let you know she's getting really to go into heat. First heat can vary quite a bit, can be early like 7 month, or could be almost 1 1/2 years old. I didn't get if you were planning to breed them later or not, but if you are, know that its strict separation for at least a month each heat. The female diapers seem to have too big of hole for the tail to prevent everything and the male diaper is better but messes up the hair a lot with long hair and I still don't trust it 100%. |
