Taping ears... Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to keep the other puppies from chewing the tape off each others ears? I have a litter of 6 very active puppies.... |
You know, I just saw somewhere pictures of young puppys ears taped, but didn't realize that some breeders did the tape trick so young. I'd be interested in knowing more about this also. How old are the pups' ears that you are wanting to tape? |
The way I do it to make it unnoticable by the other pups is: Now this is a bit lengthy. Supplies: checkbook cover, Surgical/Eyelash glue, 2 matches from a match book (cut off the part that lights). Make sure the inside of the ear is shaved. I use a Whal Peanut...purchased at Sally's Beauty Supply. 1. Use the outside of a checkbook. cut in the form of the inside of the ear. Make sure that it comes all the way down to the bottom, so that it provides enough support. 2. Completely cover one side with surgical glue. 3 Put one match in the center (up and down/length of the ear). cover the match with surgical glue. 4. Place the form on the inside of the ear, smoothing and pressing firmly until dry......at the same time fold the ear, kind of making a crease in the center.... Leave on 5 days and off 2.....repeat if necessary I start this at 8 weeks of age......and may repeat during the teething period....as pups ears have the tendancy to drop during this time....as well as when the testicles are descending. |
If you have a litter that the ears are needing help standing, the easiest thing to do is shave the inside of the ear and then put a few dots of surgical glue on the ear, keeping your thumb or finger to keep anything from going down the ear canal. Fold the ear together. The ear may flop to the side some but unless the pups have really large ears this has always worked when I had a pup that needed help with the ears. I learnt this trick from a Chihuahua breeder. Since there is no foreign material they don't notice it and don't try to chew of tape etc. Deana Prestigeous |
Thanks... I've always used masking tape but have never had a litter this large. I taped them today and they are having so much fun trying to get it off each other. I realized this techique might not work... Thanks again for the great suggestions....
