HELP Princess has eclampsia
 

I posted this in another section but everyone suggested I post it here and ask for help here's my situation:

Princess after having a perfect pregnancy and labor and even though we have supplemented and did everything by the book was rushed to the vet this afternoon she has eclampsia and she is on drip and must be away from the 4 babies for at least 24 hours so we are having to nurse them only I can't get them to take the bottle, I am so distressed first my Princess is in hospital and then trying to get the babies to nurse from the bottle,

any ideas or hints would be greatly appreciated and thank you!

The puppies would not take the puppy formula so I am feeding a mixture of yoghurt, sterile water, egg yolk, karo syrup and goats milk using a premie bottle used for humans and warming it to skin temperature. I'm doing this about every 2 hours and I have the puppies on a hot water bottle although we live in the Caribbean and our house stays at about 83 degrees

Our vet called late in the evening to tell us Princess is responding well to the calcium drip

but one of my huge questions is will Princess be able to go back to nursing at least on a limited basis with a calcium supplement or will we have to take the puppies away until she dries up and if so how long does that take, also at what stages do I begin extending the feed time for the puppies and when do we begin trying solid food?

Finally, I can get them to go piddle but not pooh yet any hints or tips on that? I'm rubbing with a warm wet washcloth in the same motion as if mommy was there to lick them

Im so sorry to hear this, I dont think she will be able to nurse them once she gets back home, you will prob have to continue to bottle feed the babies.
Long ago My little female went through this same thing, the vet did not tell me I could not put the pups back on her, and I did and it was to much and she died. I felt it was both our faults, The vets for not telling me and me for not knowing. I will pray for her and her puppies, wish I lived closer I would help you out If I could.

Thank you for this information, I will not risk my Princess so I will hand feed these precious babies. I'm just hoping I'll be able to have her deal with the cleaning and socializing and that sort of thing after her milk dries up because she is such a wonderful mommy. I am sorry you lost your baby that must have been devastating. I wish all of the members here were closer :) I could use some yorkie nannies for the next couple of months! Hmmmm perhaps if I bribe with the fact that I live right on the Caribbean sea :D

Yes, you can get them to poop and had better soon or they'll be miserable pups. Take the cotton ball soaked with warm water or mineral oil and rub across the anus. I hold them in my hand (on my palm)and they stick their butts in the air and "bare down". Moms are not the most gentle so I'm not and it works, though don't do not rub them raw of course. Hopefully they're not already constipated.

The human preemies bottles that you have them on are suppose to be good, I must not have found the right ones yet, they still look big to me.

I'm glad Mom is doing better, I've never had one with eclampsia before. But I understand you're very lucky.

Princess is back home and I've discovered a creative way to allow her to be with the puppies without the risk of her having them nurse. We devised a yorkie tube top out of an elastic surgical tubing that they would put around a leg or arm or appendage on an infant and put that on her then secured it loosely with an ace bandage so now she can clean and groom them and sit with them while we bottle feed them.

We are to give her a calcium supplement twice a day and I'm giving her some of the puppy formula I'm working with. Hopefully this will get us through this critical phase at least now all we have to do is feed puppies not bathe them and make them go potty!

I'm so glad to hear Princess is back home with her babies! You must be so stressed right now!

Did her milk dry up? Why is she not aloud to nurse, will she be able to soon?

Yes, I'm pretty lucky to have yorkies and live on a Caribbean island and have a husband that does all the housework and cooking :) I must have done something right along the way LOLOLOL

We are choosing to not let Princess nurse very much as we do not want to risk a relapse. Right now I'm giving her a lot of dairy with a calcium supplement, plus giving her the formula I'm feeding the puppies. For the puppies we are allowing limited nursing with Princess and then doing the bulk of the feeding with our homemade formula. These may be the fattest puppies I have every seen! They are as round as they are long and look like miniature Rottweilers!

It's very stressful as I also work 14 hour days and my hubby works full time from a home office (thank goodness for that!) but fortunately I have a very very sympathetic boss and he had to raise one of his dogs from the time it was a week old without a mother and he's the one that gave me the formula (his are Shepherds) so he gives me plenty of time to run back and forth and be with the babies....

whew, what a thing to go through! This coming after having lost my beloved Gwinnie, my second yorkie, last year, to cancer, yikes!
