Chicken Broth?
 
I watched a whelping dvd last night and he gave his girl chicken broth while she was delivering for energy. He said it was better then water.

What do you give?

Vanilla Ice cream is awesome between puppies, as it gives them hydration, glucose for energy, and a calcium boost, will help the parathyroid gland to release a hormone from her bones, to help with muscles and pushing.

I give warm Esbilac with an egg yolk in it for protein and calcium as well as energy.

Molly had her pups 4 weeks ago and my vet said to give her chicken broth when she was delivering. She loved it and it helped her a lot. I then would put some on her food to entice her to eat. That worked also.:animal36 :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 :animal36

I always read vanilla ice cream too and then I used it with Meiahs last litter but we ended up at the vets anyways and one of the "outspoken, ignorant (she made many un-educated comments to me :mad: ) vet techs" made the comment of "oh no wonder she has diareha, you gave her ice creeam". (I wanted to smack her by then)

But anyways....I thought I was doing the right thing by giving her a little.

Well to much of anything can cause diarrhea. Chicken broth is good but it can have alot of salt which too much of isn't good either. It's all about portions and knowing your females needs. I would have wanted to smack your vet tech too,lol!!

I prefer the ice cream or the esbilac and egg combo.

Oh yes, I ended up going to an ER that I never use (nor want to ever again) and this person made SEVERAL comments about Meiahs pregnancy. My husband was quite mad too.

I only gave her a little bit to try and help with contractions. Not much at all.

You do have to watch the ice cream due to the sugar content and any artificial flavorings.

Years ago our vet told us to give a few small bites of liver and some chicken broth, It did help but we sadly loss the momma anyways. It was so sad.

I'm not sure. I'm keeping a very close eye on her. Last night I set my alarm for every couple hours to check on her.

She sleeps in my room. I do have her whelping "quiet area" all ready and I have introduced her to it.

Should she be sleeping in her whelping box at night?

Also, what about giving them yogurt? I give Baby organic yogurt in the morning, about 1 1/2 TBS

Yogurt is fine but again watch the sugar content. My gals sleep in their crates at night before whelping but are encouraged to nap in the whelping box during the day. You just want them to be comfortable there.
