Short Cords I just whelped a maltese litter with my sister. And my goodness-this girl's puppies had the shortest cords I've seen. I'm not sure if she just wasnt expelling the placenta right away or what. But after the pups was born, they were right at her, with about 1/2 inches (or less) of cord to work with. With no sign of the placenta coming with another contraction, we broke the sac, syringed and stimulated the puppies and clamped and cut the cord (normally I like to put a big clamp at the placenta so it won't get lost and will be accounted for) I had to be careful not cut her each time. I've had short cords before, but all 4 of them were short, too weird I thought. Or maybe she just wasn't delivering the placentas right after. It took alot of quick thinking and I'm sure there could have been a very different turnout if it had been the blind leading the blind. That's why I recommend whelping mentors, especially in the beginning. BTW, these are some of the healthies puppies ever. Nursing so strong, great weights and so gorgeous. |

Thanks you. When the first one delivered we jumped right in and it went very well. Well, besides my helper starting to pull by the puppy (can disembowel puppy). Let's just say she won't be doing that again lol. After the girl was completely done, we were very happy with a good (albeit odd) whelping. |

cords Sometimes the puppy is right up against the vulva, leaving little space..you are working blind. Trying delivering a pup or two with your eyes closed, it will teach you to go more by feel then sight..I am serious. Do you use a clamp to shut off the cord..if not, try it, they can get to more cord then your fingers...best wishes |
that's exactly how all 4 of them were. I used hemostats (I'm sure that was much better than these stubby fingers) to clamp and I tried to leave all I could on pup for error (if mom decided to chew). I could see how one could benefit by delivering a couple with their eyes closed. You never know what situation you're going to be in. Besides, I relied on mainly on eyesight. I'm definitely going to have to do that. Now that'll sharpen some whelping skills. Cords have dried nicely and mom is mothering quite well. She was shivering afterwards and I gave her calsorb mixed with nutrical. She was 100% percent better in about 45 seconds. Her last litter was 3 and this litter was 4, I'm sure it took alot out of her. |
whelping A friend was having serious eye problems and thought she might lose her sight some years ago...so, the nut case that I am decided to try it with my eyes closed...found out I could do better by feel then sight sometimes..LOL |
Oh yeah, next normal whelping I'm doing it lol Sounds like fun. Of course, I'll have my peeps watching and laughing knowing them I probably close my eyes and they'll pull out the video camera We like to have whelping parties.... Coke (acola) ice cream (for us) movies and alot of laughter. |
My Trixie did the same thing with her first litter.Every cord was like that also. She had 5 but we lost one. |
I had two short cords in my last litter and it was scarey!! Best wishes to your sister and her litter. |
