Questions on 3 week old puppies (and up) Well, Lexie's puppies will be 3 weeks old this Sunday. In preparing & reading for the breeding, pregnancy, whelping, and such, I also came upon a week by week puppy care chart. It speaks even now about starting to offer the pups either milk supplement and/or some type food the consistancy of oatmeal. Seeing as how they are barely starting to get up on all fours it seems a bit early for that, and I would like your opinions/adivce on when, what, how much, and how often to feed them. |
Question #2 Also, when the pups start moving about more and are kept in an x-pen, what about mom? Does she need to be kept in there also or just let her in when she needs/wants to feed them....I haven't quite figured out the system of confining the pups & giving Lexie a way to get to them except to put her in there with them. |
and another...#3 The puppies hair of course is starting to grow. Though it is growing, it is of course still short, but what there is is straight and silky soft. I'm curious as to how long or how old they are before I would be able to tell if any of their coat would have any wave to it or if it would stay nice and straight. Any thoughts or timeline of knowing for relativley sure? |
I watch the puppys and go by their and mom's timeline as far as weaning. For confining the pups but offering mom freedom we built a gate that mom can jump over but pups can't. The only thing is you have to watch the other dogs in the home as they now have access to the pups as well. As far as determing coat, I wait and evaluate that at 8 weeks when I evaluate them for structure and temperment. |
mine will be 7 weeks Monday and are still nursing but are eatting puppy food also, Lexie feeds them when she wants too, and mine are in a room with their xpen and mom when I am gone, but when I am home Lexie stays out of the room most of the time, and lets me know when she wants back in....:) |
At 3 weeks they are too young for anything but Mothers milk. When my puppies start walking around and playing is when I feed them puppy food. They are about 5 - 6 weeks old. The puppy food is watered down to an oatmeal consistancy. |

Thank you all Thanks to all of you for your advice. I also thought 3 weeks or so was too young to start offering other milk/food than Lexie's milk; as I said if they can barely stand up and walk a straight line (LOL), how could they stand long enough to lap at a dish of liquid. We just got back from shopping and bought something like LadyHawk described to attach to the xpen allowing Lexie in and out access to her pups. Yes, I agree that the more experiance I get with raising Yorkie litters, I will know better what to do and expect at these different stages. I just thought it would be a good idea to hear from the experianced breeders here for more accurate estimates on these things geared more towards Yorkies in particular. Thanks again for all your help! |

I may add, when you introduce puppy food. Make sure you dilute it with water and first make it almost watery. Then about 4 days later a little less water until they are eating mush like oatmeal. This should last a few weeks. By the time they are 8 - 10 weeks they should be eating dry kibble. I never use substitute milk only water and Mommy gives them her milk. good luck |
