Is it ok to use a crate?
 
As a whelping box? I don't think so but my husband says it will be fine! Grrrrrrrr MEN!

I tried to tell him that it is not going to be very easy to get in and out of when she is in labor or to take care of the pups and clean up.

How can I convince him that we should not use the crate?

Who does Missy belong to again? Convincing him is easy. You say, "No." LOL...as you can tell, I have very little tolerance for being told by my husband that he knows better than I do whereas MY dogs are concerned. He's learned over time and doesn't try anymore.

Honestly though, what is his reasoning behind insisting on it being used? If you are in a bind, go get one of the really big tupperware storage containers and cut a 'door' in it for momma to get in and out. You can take the lid off for access and put it back on for her privacy. Be sure to leave a 'lip' so the pups can't get out.

Just to give another suggestion...I used a container for the whelping..something like the under the bed storage container you would use....then after Diva had her baby and cleaned herself and the baby, I moved them to a (kennel) crate I already had...made for a great nursery...I put a throw cover over top for privacy...the door can be opened or closed...it's actually quite cozy...I've attached a pic...After the baby is really walking around, I'll probably move to a baby gate in a sectioned off area of the living room or for the kitchen....

Thats what I was planning on doing. I thought this would give her lots of privacy and with the lid that comes off, it would be easy access.

I will do as I please, she's my dog lol

How do you keep the pups from squirming over and getting tangled in the bars on the sides? I had thought about doing this same thing once but didn't for that reason.

I thought of that too after I moved her in there and watched the first night...so I took a blanket and made like a homemade bumper set around the crate. Then I forgot about a really cute leopart print pad and bumper set I had gotten from petedge when I was crate training Diva. It is really soft. The bumper is about 5 - 6 inches high so it works great.

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. My friend always uses a crate. But she takes the top off. Mom can get in and out, and it is cozy for puppies. Every now and then she gives it a good cleaning, which is easy cause it is all plastice. They are easy to take apart and put back together when you are done. I, myself, just cut down a cardboard box, but anything will work. :)

What kind of crate do you have? I have one that the top comes off, which makes it nice. When I had Lily, I put her in that to keep her safe when she was sleeping. I took the lid off so that I could help her move around a bit or pick her up easily. I'm not sure there would be enough room for whelping though.

it's one of the metal crates, I think the top comes off but I would have to check.

To be honest...every single litter, I made a big deal out of getting a whelping box ready, fussed over it, trying to make everything just perfect, and in the end...they never want to use it and I end up covering up a spot (usually one of their beds) with washable pee pads to begin their labor. LOL

Mine never like a whelping box so now I never fuss :D :p
