Mom Playing Rough with 6 Week Old Puppies? Hi, How rough do mom's usually play with the puppies? This is a first litter for both of us. She bites them on the back of the neck, and knocks them over. Sometimes they yip, but they jump back up and chase her when she lets them go. Should I make her stop playing so rough or is she trying to teach them things? I would love to hear your experiences! Thanks! Whitney |
Sometimes mom gets a bit rough when she's trying to wean the pups and they still try to nurse. If she hasn't dryed up yet try putting a onesy on her with a hole cut out for her tail. This will keep the pups from trying to nurse and mom from getting so annoyed. She has to teach them doggy manners and you will observe her putting them in a submissive position quite often. You may notice that she seems to pick on one or two more than the rest. Mom knows which pups are more dominant and need to learn their place. Keep an eye on them and as long as they bounce back mom isn't being as rough as it may appear. |
Hi, Thanks, that makes me feel better. She's not all the way dry yet, when they try to nurse she usually growls and they leave her alone, or she jumps up away from them. It's just when she's playing that she gets rough. I just hate hearing the poor little guys yelp like that. She does flip them on their back a lot. I'll watch her in case she gets really rough, but otherwise I'll let her do her thing, I figure she knows better than I do about what to teach them. Whitney |
