Cnn: Dog shot, killed by deputy who jumped fence into yard Can you imagine anything more devastating than walking into your "clearly posted" yard and seeing your dog get shot! Clearly I think I would lose totally lose it! The property had numerous notices of guRd dogs on the premises. The deputy jumped over the fence and the dogs ran at him - duh, of course! The deputy felt it was justified because he was responding to an alarm. Your thoughts? |
Here are a couple of news article about the incident: Sheriff: Body camera shows deputy who shot dog did right thing Pasco Co. FL deputy shoots, kills Rottweiler at dog's home, will face no charges - Orlando Pet Rescue | Examiner.com FWIW, I saw the video, and the dog looked like it was being playful rather than attacking. |
The owner said the gate was unlocked and that the deputy could have driven right up to the house. |
Mace, Pepper spray, why a bullet. My yard, my property, my dog. I do all the right things, yet my dog gets killed. All the owner wants is an apology, if that was my dog I would want more then just an apology. Uncalled for, disgusting how police are protected while owners loose a family member. |
This happens a LOT! And it's very sad. It is justified sometimes? Yes... I can't say I blame an officer for killing a loose large powerful breed in a drug-laden city running loose threatening people, but honestly... this happens SOOO often in completely utterly stupid situations where it shouldn't have happened. Too many pets are dying in their own back yards or homes. It's really terrible. And it's not just pits, rotties, etc... it's spaniels, labs, etc too. Because of this, I would never trust an officer coming up to my door without locking Jackson away first. He's a small dog but he's very loud and 'intimidating' when any stranger walks to our house. Wow, this sounds like it could've easily been mitigated / avoided. How utterly sad! |
If someone has a "Beware of Dog" sign posted on their back fence, why in the world would you attempt to go into their backyard???? One of the articles state they've been called to the residence 30(+) times...the police still haven't found whatever their looking for? I'm all about people protecting themselves, but the officer shouldn't have tried to hop the fence in the first place. Especially with that sign in place. I hope the owner gets more than an apology. |
You hop a fence, with beware of dog signs all over it, and you have no other means at your disposal to keep a dog at bay other than a gun? Bloody idiot! |
A panic alarm is sounding in a home, the police are notified, there is a Beware of Dog sign posted on entrance...should the police enter or not? There are multiple views here...story of two kids dead in a fridge in a neighbors backyard several years back...cops got slammed cuz they didn't go in the neighbors yard to check...reason BEWARE OF DOG AND multiple dogs....seems like the News of Late focuses only on the bad things that happen....I do agree there is a problem and cops need more training etc.. |

Couldn't agree more. :( |
You know, when the Feds came to my house about the killing of a nationally protected species they had an emergency supena/warrant, and gave me notice to "secure my animal" prior to coming on the property. Like some one mentioned earlier they also had mace, pepper spray and a Taser that could be set at numerous levels, and guns -- not sure if that was for the dog or me :D. But... they did not have to shoot anyone and they could still get access to the property. |

We appear to have a bunch of untrained, highly reactive without much thought, cops, whose FiRST line of defense is to shoot. |

My brother is a retired NY police officer, I have 3 nephews on the police force, I stand by them. Police have access to Mace, Pepper spray and Taser's all can be used for PETS in yards where signs BEWARE OF DOG are posted. Why shoot first, ask questions later, I agree police need additional training on warding off dogs confined on their own property. |
