New Provincial Legislation coming?? One year after the launch of the Animals are not Things manifesto, over 50 000 Quebec citizens demand a revision of the legal status of animals One year after the launch of the Animals are not Things manifesto, over 50 000 Quebec citizens demand a revision of the legal status of animals Apparently a new bill is trying to find its way onto the floor. Animals as sentinent beings! |
I hope this passes, catches on, and spreads well beyond Quebec. Well done, Montreal SPCA. Animals are not things: Manifeste pour une évolution du statut juridique des animaux dans le Code civil du Québec |

This is a dangerous road they want to hoe. Very very concerning. The ramifications are broad-reaching. Trust me I don't have the answer but I know the legislators have not thought out all the implications. |

Here in is the pet owners dilemma we don't feel that a stolen TV or a defaced home is a loss in the same way if our pet was stolen or hurt. We want better protection for our animals in our care. And we naturally want to support legislation that seems to be on the road to giving our pets more protection under the law. But at what cost to us? Surely there is some legal middle ground that recognizes our companion animals as more than a TV but less than a sentinent being? And never mind the bad neighbour example, what if vets could report us for not doing a dental, or a cancer treatment? The implications astound an frighten me. |
It makes me very sad that we can't do more to protect our little ones without such dangerous implications of such a law. I would do anything in my power to protect my little girl, and her worth to us is priceless. But laws where dogs can be seized without proof of cruelty are too dangerous. I usually analyze things to death, yet I was easily tricked by this law. I will never forget the story of Leo, a ten year old Bichon who was taken from his mom's arms and thrown into traffic because of a case of road rage. It drew a great deal of attention and the ire of animal lovers everywhere. The man was sentenced to three years in prison, the maximum for animal cruelty in California, but they were recommending probation for him. I wonder what would have happened if this story wasn't as highly publicized. Like most animal lovers, the story of Leo broke my heart. His life mattered, and i wonder how we can protect these innocent animals without dangerous implications. There are many laws already on the books to protect animals. They just need to be enforced better, and the witch hunting needs to stop. Adding more laws just bogs down the system and opens the doors to abuse of the people who are trying to live peacefully with their animals. I can't help noticing the lack of interest in this tread. One way or another, people should be on here spitting mad. |

I can speculate that what happens in Canada does not matter to Americans. But really all boundaries start to blur and blend when or with certain subjects. Maybe make dogs a protected species similar to your Bald Eagle... |
