Glue traps
 

A very recent experience prompted me to make this thread.

Why are glue traps legal?

We have a wide variety of alternatives that either kill the animal quickly, or catch it harmlessly for release. But you can still get these at your local hardware store for cheap.

For those of you who don't know what glue traps are, they are basically a sheet of plastic with industrial strength superglue on them. Animals such as mice or rats get stuck of them, and panic - the resulting panic makes them fight for their lives pretty much. In the process, they can rip off skin, break bones, dislodge jaws and eyeballs and even gnaw off a limb to starve to death. The animal will continually excrete its waste products out of fear, it will build up so the animal is basically smeared in it slowly dying. The instructions on the back of the package encourage people to simply discard the animal once caught - presumably throw it in the trash, even if it's still alive. Many people are timid and would have no idea how to euthanize a wounded animal properly.

Some might say "it's just a rodent" or it's "vermin" but that doesn't mean it's OK to slowly torture it to death. I do not think they should be allowed to be used at all. It's a barbaric way to kill anything, and it's so unnecessary. Furthermore, this trap is also used on birds and lizards - non-target species are regularly caught up in them too.

So what are people's thoughts on these things?

I agree with you. We used glue traps one time about 10 years ago. It was horrible..will never do that again.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: I agree with you 10,000% and I thank you for posting about this. I'm categorically against all traps that are meant to kill, maim, torture. I understand the use of safe repellents or safe/human traps...but there is no excuse for tortuous traps.

I can't even believe that the leg traps are even still used or legal in this world of ours - they are the utter definition of absolute sick torture and human arrogance and ignorance.

We had brown recluse spiders and had the exterminators here and the glue traps for these spiders were the only things that we found that finally worked.

Agree!!! I couldn't stand the thought of having an animal trapped on my property like that and slowly dying!!! Horrors!

I hate them. I don't understand why they are legal either.

Well, I will be the first to say that I do love animals. But, I love our dogs much more than I love mice. We had an itty bitty mouse in our house once and I still have no idea why it was here (nothing for him/her to get into). Dog food is in a sealed container as is the chicken feed, and we never leave open food packages or food on plates. Yet, it decided to take up residence anyway.

Mice can easily pass Leptospirosis (if they are infected and there is no way to know if they are or are not) to your dogs unless they are vaccinated against it, causing irreversible organ damage and can be fatal. They can catch this simply by *sniffing* mouse urine - don't even need to ingest or digest it.

The Lepto vaccine is what is known in the doggy world as a "hot" vaccination - it can cause more harm than good, especially on a toy breed. Lepto vac is not a core vaccine, it is noncore and therefore our dogs do not, and will never - get it.

So...yes, we used glue traps and snap traps to catch this one little mouse. The snap trap ended up being the one that worked, but I would not be opposed to using the glue trap if it happened again...would do it again in a heartbeat.

If that makes me inhumane, cruel, unkind or a hater of little critters - I don't care. I'm protecting my furbabies even if it means killing a mouse in a painful manner.
