Mink Oil - Should we care?
 
Just recently while reading on this site, I found out Mink Oil products really do contain rendered mink fat. I know we are great animal lovers on this site - many going to great extremes to help end cruelty to animals, including to our precious yorkies.

Should we care that mink oil in some grooming products/shampoos comes from the rendered fat from minks as the animal lovers that we are here on YT?

I was curious what everyone thought about this!:confused:

I too found out recently that Mink Sheen contains actual mink products. I almost was going to buy it, and I'm glad I didn't.

I can't say I'm one who doesn't use animal products at all, bc I do...but I strive to make the changes I can; and Mink Sheen is an easy one for me to avoid entirely - no problem, not a sacrifice for me at all.

So, I definitely care about hearing of these kinds of ingredients :).

It would be great if we had a sticky in this section about ingredients/products...I thought we had one, but maybe we don't. We may have one on a subsequent page and maybe we just missed making it a sticky. I will look around...it'd be good to have in the YT Library too.

I 'thought' I had never used mink oil before, until I saw a post by Wylie's Mom this morning and realized that my shampoo - Minksheen - contains mink oil.

I'm still in shock over that realization. Like Ann said in her post, I just assumed the name came from the glossy results it gives the coat. It never once occured to me that minks were suffering to make these products. :(

Are there mink "farms" where animals are grown for this purpose? :confused:

I would think the fat (where the oil is procured) would be extracted after the minks are skinned for their fur. Mink farms are horrible, as you probably know :(.

Well, I've bought mink oil as a grooming spray for my dogs, but it's been a while. I still have some of it left. I dilute it with water and conditioner.

I did think about it when I bought it, but figured it was a by-product of an existing industry (fur), so didn't think minks were being killed primarily for the oil. Sounds really dumb when I type that out. Just goes to show that we can rationalize anything.

There are good alternatives to mink oil for grooming, as I've since found out. But, just reading the wiki link about how it's widely used on leather, among other things, makes me wonder how big the business is.

Just guessing about this, but I imagine that mink oil isn't 'necessary' for any uses and other things would be used if it wasn't readily available. Hasn't the fur business in the U.S really shrunk? Do we easily get mink oil due to the fur market in other countries?

Would love to see any other data you can find about this. Thanks for bringing this up. Patronizing any cruel industry does help sustain it.

I found another site saying some mink oil is extracted through subq needle through abdomen, but most oil is extracted post skinning of animal. What Is Mink Oil?

I have to say I also thought the mink references in the names of these products was because of the "mink like sheen" that it left until Anne asked in another thread. I was surprised by the answer.

I do think the fur industry has shrunk, but that the cruelty of them hasn't. It amazes me how many celebrities *still* wear fur, when they could have a more positive influence on wearing it. I think Stella McCartney is one of few top designers who does not use fur or leather in her clothes or shoes or bags (of course, she is way out of my league); but her celebrity and relation to Paul McCartney (father) does reach others. There are tons of other less $ designers (online) who don't use animal products either.

So true about getting mink oil outside the U.S. - that is very likely too.
