What a heartbreaking list. I want to ask: I've heard that often vets recommend that you NOT be present if your pet must be put down, because if you get very upset, your pet (who doesn't understand what's happening) will get upset too, and their final moments won't be peaceful. |

I've even seen where they dim the lights in the exam room to make it a calmer environment for the pet...and I suppose the family, too. I especially chose the Yorkie Breed because of their mortality rate...I want 'em to be around forever but, I also want them happy & free of any misery when that day comes so...I'll definitely be there saying my goodbyes & cradling them in my arms. Hopefully, that day will be a very long time coming for any of my girls:( |
Great post. They should hang a sign up at all shelters, vets, and awful pet stores right over the dogs, so maybe someone will think before they take in that animal they just have to have. |
I have some more: Press 36 if you just want to come by and pet some dogs, even though you have no intention of adopting one, and don't care that it is very stressful for the dogs to be constantly handled, and difficult for the staff to accommodate the zillion people who come by wanting to do the exact same thing. Press 37 if you want to adopt a dog, then return it because you are "too busy" to potty train it, and then expect updates on the dog and its new adopted family for the rest of its life because you "love" the dog, just not enough to actually take care of it. Press 38 if you got the urge to adopt a dog this morning, and feel you should be allowed to pick one up this afternoon with no questions asked. Press 39 if you plan to write a nasty review of the rescue on Yelp because the staff put the welfare of the animal before your personal convenience. |
There is a thread in the General Section today about what we have learned from YT. I have learned a lot about taking care of my two regarding medical, training, grooming, etc. But the threads like this one are the ones I remember the most. I always have to look up something again about medical or training but I never forget something like this. I have heard of people wanting to surrender their dog and giving the rescue nothing to take with it. No toys, no blankets, no food, NOTHING! One family did offer to send an old, rusted crate. They wanted to keep the best one "in case we get another dog". This should be mandatory reading for everyone that even thinks they want to get a dog. But of course some people won't get it. I have said this more than once, I don't see how some people sleep at night. |
It just breaks my heart  Thanks for sharing |
1 Attachment(s) One that broke my heart (although, coming into rescue was the best thing that could've happened for the little one) Press ... if your tiny 4 year old baby has untreated flea allergies and you'd like to have him pts because he's not pretty anymore. Attachment 303729 |
