Journey to Death This has got to stop. If you have the desire to donate to a worthy cause, then please help the Canadian Horse Defense Coalition. This article is not for the faint of heart, as yours will surely break after reading. Journey to Death for Unwanted Horses in Canada |
Oh, that's just disgusting but all too common in the commercial meat industry. I agree, this has to stop. I really think most people would demand better treatment for these animals if they were aware of the suffering they endure. This is a little off topic, but I want to say that I eat meat but am becoming less and less comfortable with it. I've tried finding a source of meat that is humanely raised and slaughtered but am having no luck in my area. For now, I've cut back on my meat eating and am eating more beans as a protein source. I recently did a little looking around and found out about the horrors of the commercial pork industry. That especially bothered me because pigs are said to be more intelligent than dogs. I think the awful treatment is the norm for the commercial meat industry, no matter the animal. Whether we eat them or not, all animals deserve a good quality of life and a humane death. Cruelty is cruelty, whether it's done to a chicken, horse, pig, cow, or a pet. |
You are absolutely right, most people have no clue about CAFO's and the horrid conditions in which the animals are kept. Most pigs from Smithfield live in a 4x4 stall all of their miserable tortured 6 months of life. They are fed antibiotic cocktails at an alarming rate. MRSA is a constant threat to the immigrants who normally man the stalls. Most pigs are insane at the end of 6 months; as they are social intellectual creatures being imprisoned and literally driven crazy by it. As you have stated cattle and chicken are no better. Their CAFO's are just as horrendous for them as it is for the humans living around their containment. Cancer and MRSA are a constant threat for those neighbors. Until the American Sheeple wake up and stop buying into this torture then it will persist. I am practically vegetarian as well. When I buy meat I try to make sure that it is from a humanitarian organic farm. I refuse to support what is being allowed to happen. Congratulations for standing up for what is right!:thumbup: Most people do not know, or even care about what they or their children are eating so long as it is cheap and they can cook it within 5 minutes. It is a disgrace to America. |
Here's something more to the point of your original post that may interest you... New EU rules may end slaughter of American Horses This obviously doesn't address the cruelty these horses endure but is at least a step in the right direction. If the market for these animals dries up, the cruelty of these slaughterhouses will stop. It may bring other problems but, hey, one step at a time. |
Thanks for the link. This new rule might just be the thing to decrease the slaughter. We can only hope! |
WOW. To open your eyes, heart, and mind even further....I CANNOT recommend highly enough the documentary EARTHLINGS - narrated by Joaquin Phoenix. I believe it can be rented at Netflix, but I don't think Blockbuster has it. I own it and may be open to lending it out... You can watch the full film on the website, but the quality isn't the greatest...it is *not* easy to watch, but I feel like every human being should see it. |
Ann, there's a lot of stuff posted on you tube. You can do a search and find video of the horrible practices of any type of meat or egg farming. Just do a search like 'egg farm cruelty', 'pig farm cruelty', etc. and they will come up. One doesn't have to be a vegan to be totally disgusted by the everyday practices of these 'industries'. Actually, I think it's the meat eaters among us that should be up in arms over this. Meat eaters should be upset that the absolute filth these animals live in makes the over-use of antibiotics necessary. Also, any animal that is stressed at the time of slaughter releases chemicals that negatively affect the quality of the meat. The bottom line is that these practices aren't necessary. They don't do the animals or the consumer any good. This is one area that I'd like to see strict regulations imposed and enforced. It would cost more to enforce them but I think the industry should be made to pay for that. It would make prices higher but I'm okay with that. We shouldn't think it's fine to heap horrors on whole species for the sake of a cheap bacon cheeseburger. |
