Sheriff's police raid dog-fighting ring at day care home - Chicago Breaking News


Cook County sheriff's police said they seized nine mutilated and abused dogs this week from a dog-fighting ring operating out of a Maywood day care home.

Sheriff Tom Dart said his officers found a dog with its eye ripped out, a dog with a leg twisted backward and a dog with its lower extremities nearly ripped off its body in their raid Tuesday.

"Kids were playing on a swing set just 10 feet away from a vicious fighting dog and blood-stained floors," Dart said while cuddling a puppy taken during the raid. "The very equipment used to train these dogs to kill was being kept in the garage right behind the house. To be engaged in this sort of activity is disturbing enough, but to take a chance with anybody's children is reprehensible."

The sheriff's office said the daycare operator insisted she was not involved in dog fighting, and maintained children were never near the dogs or dog-fighting equipment.

Child welfare officials said they made four visits to the home since 2006 and found the dogs locked in the garage away from the children. But after Tuesday's raid, the woman voluntarily gave up her license to run a day care, according to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

"This day care home operator complied with our request today to surrender her license with cause," said DCFS spokesman Kendall Marlowe. "This day care home is now closed, and we will monitor the home going forward to ensure that it does not reopen."
anderson-martezthisone.jpgDart said police arrived at the home, 2101 S. Third Ave. in the western suburb, on Tuesday and saw 10 children being watched at the house. In a garage behind the house, police said they found "a very aggressive" pit bull, with blood on the floor and along the sides of a car.

"Also in the garage were syringes, medication, bite sticks and harnesses used in dog fights," the sheriff's office said in a release. "The chest of the dog found in that garage was shredded from a recent fight and its penis was bitten almost completely off."

Investigators learned the dogs were housed nearby at 2025 S. Sixth Ave., home to an ex-con who charged $60 a month for dogs to be kept there, according to the sheriff's office. Martez Anderson, 38, was released from prison on a drug conviction in 2006 and was cited Tuesday for being a felon in possession of an unneutered or unspayed dog.


webb-lancethisone.jpgIn the garage at Anderson's home, police said they found an 18-month-old pit bull with three 4-week old puppies. They were all kept in a wire cage soaked in feces and urine, with no signs of food or water for them, Dart said.

"All were severely emaciated," his office said in a release. Police said they believe the puppies were already being used in fights, possibly as "bait dogs." One puppy had its left eye ripped out and had several puncture wounds to its face.

In a shed behind that garage, a 1-year-old pit bull was found "extremely scarred" with its leg turned completely backward. In a crate behind that shed, police said they found another pit bull that could barely stand.

As police searched the property Tuesday, they noticed a large opening in a fence separating Anderson's yard from a neighbor's. In that yard, they saw a badly injured pit bull tied to a logging chain. The dog had fresh fighting wounds, possibly from a fight this week, Dart's office said.

sutton-charlesthisone.jpgThe owner of that house, 2027 S. Sixth Ave., consented to a search of his home, he said. In a dilapidated garage there, police found a treadmill which had been altered specifically to train dogs to fight. Police also found another malnourished puppy locked in that garage, police said.

"What was done to these dogs is inexcusable," Dart said. "This was done in the name of gambling and greed and no area seems to be immune from its influence - we see it in rural farm areas and inner cities. Unfortunately, we're also seeing more and more kids exposed to this kind of lifestyle."

All dogs seized in the raid are at the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge.

"They would take the dogs in the garage during the day and you could hear them fighting," said Guadalupe Castro, 40, who lives down the block from the disbanded dog-fighting operation. "We would hear dogs barking and making fighting sounds."

She said she suspects two or three people attended the fights at a time. She noticed this all started by the beginning of the summer.

"I was scared because sometimes the dogs would get loose and run down the street," Castro said. "I'm glad they got them [dogs] out of here."

Another neighbor, who declined to identify herself for fear of retribution from anyone involved in the dog-fighting operation, said she would call the village of Maywood often about the dogs. She said the dogs would be tied up to a pole and would bark and try to attack one another.

But some of those facing charges dismissed the seizure as a raid on "some Momma and the puppies."

"You got all kind of criminals running around Maywood and you would actually spend taxpayers' dollars to come to my house to get some Momma and the puppies?" said Martez Anderson, 38, accused of keeping fighting dogs in his home. "That's crazy. All the dogs that they took from here had the papers on them. I want to clarify that."

Four dogs were recovered from Anderson's home - a mother and her three puppies. He said his his cousin, Lance Webb, charged with charged with felony dog fighting, was not involved in dog fighting.

Anderson said he was planning to sell the dogs later on and they were all in good condition except for one puppy that hurt its eye after a door fell on it.

"They probably could of did for a bath or so, but other than that, they wasn't like ate up like they're making it out to be," he said, adding that the dogs were not used for fighting.

Anderson said he didn't know the neighbors next door were involved in dog-fighting.

Elizabeth Lyons -- owner of the home in the 2000 block of South Sixth Avenue that allegedly had a treadmill in a garage altered to train dogs to fight -- said the dog being kept in the garage was her grandson's puppy.

Lyons said she didn't know how long the puppy had been staying in the garage and didn't know its age, but said it didn't have any injuries.

"We didn't have no fighting dogs...We've had dogs all of my life. I don't go for that," she said. "I'm afraid of fighting dogs anyway. You hear about them all of the time turning against their owners," Lyons said, adding that she has a Shiatsu named Kisser.

A third man charged was Charles Sutton, 42, of Maywood -- whose wife operated the day care. He was charged with felony dog-fighting.

A new low...and we wonder why famous football players think this is okay to do. Another generation taught this abuse is okay. It makes you wonder when the abuse will end.

I just heard about another abuse two weeks ago....bar breeding.

Someone brings in a female in heat and ties her on the bar and then bring in as many males as they can find...then everyone sits around drinking and watching the action. It doesn't matter the size of the male and little dogs have been crushed down by the weight of these dogs. God knows what happens to the female after this has happened to her and she gets pregnant.

That is OUTRAGEOUS:mad:!

And this is why I constantly harp about the legal actions that must be taken to these abusers...one day maybe the laws will change if we all demand it by sending letters, phone calls etc...DEMANDING that the book be thrown at these people. If they abuse animals then the odds go up they are abusing children.

Remember, Numbers = Strength...

These people are truly sick in every sence of the word!
Jail time is not good enough. It's so frustrating to read
stories like this because they only seem to get worse instead
of better. Innocent children and innocent animals will continue
to suffer unless our laws are changed and I don't see that

Those who can do such unspeakable crimes to any dog in my opinion are monsters that are NOT from Gods image, but are freaks that have been bred without a soul on some other plane or planet, and implanted in a human here on earth. They need to be eradicated.

:( I had to stop reading about one third into this article and I deinfitely did not open the pictures! I am in tears...what is wrong with people?!! I will NEVER EVER understand how a human being can be this cruel....I just cannot even begin to wrap my brain around this type of thinking. :thumbdown I am just in tears...how can they take an innocent creature and torture it?! How can they just leave them to suffer? I can't stand for mine to eat food that might make them sick...I definitely cannot fathom hurting them or allowing them to be in pain...NO WAY!!

This is how ugly it really is out there and why I continue to post that people need to get invovled with the legal system.....it is very ugly and I understand why most people can't deal with it...but it goes on everyday.:(

How many people here on YT won't even open this thread because it bothers them... While I understand why they won't...animals are dying every day because of this. .....ask anyone that is in rescue or has beenn involved with rescue how much pain they have really seen with their rescues .... it is very painful and sad.

THIS is what people need to remember foremost. Especially the ones that use the argument of human life vs animal in prioritizing. It has been proven time and again. Those that abuse animals in any way, will and do abuse and kill humans. A disregard for life is a disregard for life of any kind, on any level. A lack of compassion crosses all boundaries. That is why it seems that dog fighting and these types of activities are prevalent in the same socio-economic areas as gangs, drive by shootings--the same areas that have seemed to lower their premium on human life.

Couldn't even read the whole report - it turned my stomach. I only hope that one day these sick monsters will suffer like their poor innocent victims have.

:(:(:( This story is horrific - just sick ...I can't even imagine the fear and pain these dogs lived with on a daily basis.

Every time I read about what man does to his best friend I want to cry. The people involved in this need to go down for a long time. Until the courts get tougher it will continue.

The little puppies they showed were just adorable - how the h*ll can someone DO this ? I will never never wrap my mind around it. The only good part in this is they did get busted. I normally don't say stuff like this but.... I hope all involved are beaten and hurt in jail. I really do.

That's just it, until they actually dole out 'real' punishments for these types of crimes... means nothing. Animals are just property. Criminal damage to property. As far as the law is concerned they are not living breathing beings. That is the whole crux of the problem. They need to see the correlation between hurting animals and hurting people, then maybe they'll stiffen the penalties. Until they do... the money made far outweighs the fines paid out. These people are wired different than you or I and they see these dogs as cars, houses, furniture. The only way to affect them is through penalty vis a vis, jail time and wallet, and it is going to require a change in the statutes to accomplish that.

That's horrific, these people are low lifes who preyed on defenseless animals at a daycare...how pathetic is that. lt's another reason for the laws to become more strict on these people who commit senseless crimes like this. Until they "criminal" are really punished correctly its open season for this to continue to happen. I say everytime a horrible crime happens start cutting off limbs, arms, legs fingers whatever. People haveto know that if you committ crimes you will be "punished" not sent to jail for a little while and then be let out.

I read the daycare/dogfighting story yesterday at work and it made me cry. It is people like that who really make me believe in "eye for an eye" punishment. Anyone involved in that should be shot and left to die in pain.

I found in interesting that in IL there is a law that says a felon cannot own an unaltered dog. Interesting...........:thumbup:
