Worried about young kids with yorkie Hello! I'm new to yorkie talk, so Im not quite sure if this is the right category for posting this. :p This forum seems really helpful!:) I just got a 3 month old yorkie puppy yesterday. He's so sweet!:lovewings He loves to play with everything he sees! But sadly, its living in my grandparents' house because the bought him for me. Thing is, is that my little cousins are there all the time, and they are very violent, with all their war games and such. They will not let the poor dog rest. :( I mean, they get so excited with the dog, and they chase it, tease it with its toys, and the dog will not get any resting time. Its hard to get the young kids to behave, because every time someone corrects their behavior, their mom stands up for them, and gets super angry at whoever corrected them. I'm afraid that they might try to carry it, and drop it, or maybe when they get upset at the dog they might try to hurt him! Yorkies are very fragile~ There are just so many kids that the yorkie gets overwhelmed! I could always leave the dog at my house, but I have school during the day, and my mom works. The house is empty from 8:00 in the 4:00 in the afternoon, and Ive heard its awful to leave yorkies alone for such a long time! Leaving him at my grandparents is the only solution. I have no idea what to do with my baby! Please help! :D Thanks soo much for help!! |
Congratulations on your new baby! If it were me, I would leave her at home alone rather than in that situation that you described. She could very easily get very hurt. Perhaps someone could check in on her or maybe doggy day care? Even if she is left alone all those hours (hopefully she'll sleep) I think she would be safe. Good luck!! |

Thanks a lot! Maybe I could ask my grandpa to check in around 10 o'clock, and I could leave the TV on, so at least it won't be totally silent. Maybe I'll do that!:p |
Congratulations on your new baby and welcome to YT. If it were me, I would rather leave her at home alone than take a chance on something happening to her at your grandparents house. My grandkids know to be very careful around my dogs, but all the activity still stresses the dogs out. I think your baby would be better off alone with everything that it sounds like she might be exposed to over there! |
That's what I would do for sure. Maybe get him an expen or crate and just have a pee pad for her and some water. Toys too that are appropriate as well. Someone on this forum suggested a dvd made for dogs which might be good too. I think as long as he is confined, cool enough and has the tv on he should be fine. It would be great if your grandpa could check in on him. Before leaving him, I would spend time with him in your house so he feels comfortable. Then, walk out the door and 3o seconds later walk back in. Continue doing that increasing the time so he sees that when you leave you will come back. Post some pics too! The advice is just my opinion obviously but I hope you find a system to keep him safe in your home. |
Yep! Its decided- I'll do that! I want to get one of those big doggie playpens, you know, you can fit a lot of stuff in there! A bed, a wee wee pad, food, and some toys, they are all going in! At least my baby will be safe! Edit: I'll post some pictures of him as soon as I can! If I can get him to stay still for the camera!! XD |
Pet Crates: Precision Dog Crate / Wire Dog Kennel at PETCO above find an example of a crate. http://www.petco.com/Shop/SearchResu...&Ntt=precision above find some exercise pens and crates. http://www.petco.com/Shop/SearchResu...&Ntt=precision above find the ex pen that we use now. We crate trained until he was maybe 6-7 months I think. Then, we used the expen to block part of the room so he could still be confined and safe but have more room. You can find many manufacturers but I'm just suggesting the ones we used. |
Oh, and just wanted to add that when he was teething he would chew on his bed and we had to replace that with a few plush and comfy towels. Buy lots of teething toys and immediately take them away if you see he's chewing a piece off...you don't want him to swallow it. |
It's your baby , take responsibility and have it home with you. I don't care how defensive the mom is, I would be more defensive. your baby does NOT belong at your grandparents house, it belongs with you and take responsibility . if something happens you will regret it so do the right thing now. Good Luck:) |
Definitley keep the puppy at home. He is much safer than at your grandparents with unruly kids. Before I retired I left my puppies home in an area gated off and they all did fine. Congratulations on your new puppy. |
Congratulation on your new baby. That puppy needs to be with you. I would buy an Xpen. |
