For treats - there's nothing wrong with liver or chicken. I use very, very small treats. I want it to be just a taste for encouragement and to leave them wanting more. When I had Cody in obedience training he gained 1 1/2 lbs from treats, wish I knew then about just giving him a "taste". I wouldn't give him his breakfast meal as our lessons were early morning, I took that kibble for his treats as Cody is very food motivated, yet he still gained weight. The weight came off when the sessions ended. Yes do be careful with food / treat rewards, a taste is what I would advise.Good luck.

Woohoo! Good luck. It's a lot of fun. And it can be hard to get certain dogs motivated, but it's possible! You also have to kind of act like a nut lol. Does talking in a high squeaky type voice get her excited? She will feed off your energy. I will often mix a bunch of different yummy treats in a bag when we did agility classes... so I would use some low fat dog treats (such as Soft n Chewy Buddy Biscuits) and then have them in a baggy with little bits and pieces of string cheese, chicken, or hot dog, so that he wasn't 100% getting the 'human food' but all the other treats had the flavoring on it. Sometimes I'd even throw some kibble in there. I think the fun was he never knew what he was going to get.

Hope you love it. Cali was so-so with rally but she loves agility because it is rowdy and goofy with yelling and hooting and all that stuff!

Thanks for all your suggestions. I think I am more excited than Lexi. Right now she seems to be hesitant to work with me. I am going to keep at it though. I can't seem to find a treat that she goes crazy for. Right now I am just using chicken and mozzarella cheese. I found another clicker that isn't quite as loud as the first one. But for now I am just trying to get her to work with me willingly without the clicker. That darn clicker just scared her. But I so want her to be successful.

Please understand that not all dogs respond positively to a clicker.

In fact, my Cali does not like to be around clickers in general. Some dogs do well with them, but some do not. There are some trainers however who feel it is the only way.

You know your dog better than anyone so you might need to experiment some.

I will be anxious to hear how this goes! We have a four pound yorkie and I have thought she would love agility. We had 2 medium-large sized dogs in the past and they loved agility! With one we did obedience and then agility. We the other we used agility as the obedience training and it worked just as well, but was a lot more fun for all of the us. Good luck!

I didn't forget about those treats. These are my dogs favorites. They really stink. Even with treats like these I cut them into little pieces. They are made in the USA.

Too true! A few dogs in our agility class had problems with clickers. I remember a Jack Russell Terrier that was so terrified of the sound he wouldn't even enter the building. Yep, I would advise to use that ball point pen, do a test run by charging it at home before you begin class.

I use two clickers- a quiet one for indoor training (Karen Pryor) and a louder one (Premier) for outdoor training. I also like the ones with the buttons because they use less force to *click* and I find that helps with my timing.

I found the treats!! A pet store that I go to every so often said they used to have them, but they didn't sell very well, so they stopped selling them. They were sampling them at the counter. She said she wished they would have sampled them earlier because all the dogs love them. She gave me a little Baggie of them and Lexi seems to really like them. I ordered some on Amazon and then realized they might have them at Petco. They look like they are pretty healthy, made in the USA too. I think they might work. I agree they are smelly though. I might have to use a rubber glove. I can't get that smoky smell off my fingers. I am trying the ball point pen to try to desensitize her to the clicker sound. Thanks again for all the helpful information.
