Petsmart Training We live in the Oklahoma City area, and just started training our little yorkie, Gypsy, at PetSmart. I'm very disappointed, the girl doing the training is nice, but seems to lack experence, and isnt so good with working and giving you tips if your pup is having a hard time. Anyway, I wish I'd gone to Full Circle Obiendence School. I had used them about 10 years ago; they were wonderful, but I choose PetSmart this time because it was right down the street.... Sigh, live and learn... |

oh , i am sorry you are having a bad experience with the petsmart trainer. my oscar recently completed a 6 week course and it was awesome but we had an experienced trainer. are there other trainers available ? maybe you could request a different class/time with another trainer... |
I was afraid Petsmart might be like that. I'm sure they must have some good trainers too. With Heidi was my first time ever doing obedience training. We took classes at Tulsa Dog Training Club they were very serious about it. At first I thought it was way too strict & rigid. Even though obedience trials aren't for me, looking back I am so glad we did it & see the value in it. Would definitely do it again. You can always take it at the other place. I'd just be afraid of getting the dog confused if its different. |
They have one other, but that one isn't teaching the puppy classes. And the trainer is very sweet, just not experienced enough :( I'm sure there are some great ones out there. Oh well, we'll probably continue Gypsy trainer, but I'll just go with the obedience school I know for sure is great, worth the drive, I know that now, lol. :) |
What I remembered, the commands are the same, just the methods and tips are different. I remember they had at home non aggressive exercises to establish Leader of the pack. Which it was so long ago, I just don't remember exactly what the steps were... Also they were great about working with you individually if you were having problems, and they seemed to have a skill of making the class work together well on the different dogs individual issues. One doggie had a problem with socialization, and we all worked with the dog a bit to help, stuff like that. I'm remembering more as I go through this class, but it's making me realize how much I forgot too; if that makes sense. :) |
First of all, I work at Petsmart so I know that if you are not satisfied with your training you CAN and should get a refund. That being said second I would sugg est you pick up a book by Kyra Sundance called "The Dog Tricks and Training Workbook". It is awesome and they do sell it at Petsmart. It contains a pack of training cards to help you put and her methods are awesome!!! One of our trainers uses this for her classes and it helps tremendously!!! I trained my yorkie with it and she is awesome now knowing over 30 commands and tricks! Hope this helps dear :) |
What type of a collar do they use in training now, it's been a while for me. Since one would use a jerk motion when they are learning to heal, I would think they would be able to use a softer collar than a large dog would. |
i took my oscar to petsmart and they did not specify what type of collar but i would have refused anyway because i only use a harness on my yorkie, never a collar |
I use an easy walk harness to train my yorkies. It is a harness but the leash clips at the front. The front goes across their chest, not on their neck. It decreases the sled dog effect of a regular harness. We don't use the jerk correction methods for any dog but I would never recommend it for a toy breed like a yorkie. Yorkie really respond to positive reinforcement so well. Mine have a very nice heel and they've never been jerked. |
Thanks to you both of you for your answers on the collar question I had.:) I think the easy walk harness would be the best to use. I have seen that before and hope more trainers will allow it. |
Hi. Truffles just graduated the same puppy class few weeks ago. I felt same way at first class.... and thought about changing the trainer. she is young college girl who is working on side and she explain what we going to do etc.... but I realized it's not much her job to teach my pup.... she educated my family and I to train my pup Truffles... so after 2nd class I was more excepted how it's gonna be and we did a lots of home works!( training at home ) and now we are in intermedia class with same trainer and we are very happy :) She also has 2 yorkie mix and few more so she is very impress with Truffles that how good she is :) Hope you and your baby will have great 5more weeks! |
