Ugh. Barking. Tallulah is four, and obedience training wasn't a total priority when she was a puppy because her health was a major concern at the time (she's a teacup, which is terrible, and it wasn't my choice, but this isn't the time for that story). We'll be doing obedience classes as soon as I have a job and can afford to pay for them, but here's my gripe... As a pup, she used to spend a great deal of time with my grandma's dogs who barked at anything that passed the front window. Over time, she learned this behavior and now she's taught it to our other two dogs. It's a terrible habit and obnoxious (I've hit the point of annoyance where I'm fed up and don't even TRY anymore). We've tried techniques taught by both Victoria Stilwell and Cesare Milan, but NOTHING has worked. In a few months, we'll be moving to a house where I'll have roommates and I want to take the time NOW to break this barking habit so she doesn't irritate anyone when we move. She's a sweet girl with a gentle disposition, but we need to curb the barking. Reprimand doesn't work, a tap on the nose with a single finger does nothing. I want to try a dog whistle at some point, but I was wondering if an expert on this could help me at all. Please and thanks (: Tallulah and the Bee |
I think I might've posted this in the wrong section and I apologize! Also I've been browsing a bit and I'm not having much luck finding an approach that I think is workable. |
To be honest I still can't get my 2 to stop yapping and we live in an apartment complex. I hear them all the way from the parking lot when I leave. I'm surprised our neighbors haven't filed a complaint lol. Sorry to be of no help here but hopefully someone else has a suggestion :) |
A whistle works for me |
Okay, awesome. This is progress. Is there any way I can avoid this turning into something she'll just ignore? |

natural I love dog but hope it stop barking a the time. |
Try rewarding for no barking. When mine bark, I first investigate to show them I see what's exciting them, then I give them a hand command and say "no bark." The second they stop, I put a treat in front of them. If they don't stop, I let them see I have a treat. |
We have just moved into a apartment complex a few weeks ago. Suzi does bark a lot to, however it is more of a territorial bark then anything else. She seems to know the difference when we come home then strangers passing along our apt. Because she has never barked at us. ast week she did at my son as he was coming home, only because he had a haircut, LOL. it feels safer to me that she has warning barks, our shh tzu hardly ever barks, but when she does it is late at night when Suzi is not awake. using one command word consistently cn teach them not to bark. and then rewarding hem with a small treat when they do not bark can help. Just remember you still want them to bark when it is necessary. So would not teach them not to bark alltogether. |
