Doesn't like the wet, morning dew for potty time... Henry is 14 weeks now. He is not potty trained but is good at going potty outside. He is starting to get the hang of going to the back door when he wants to go out (although he doesn't really ring the bell on the door but that's another topic). The one problem seems to be in the morning when the grass is wet from the dew- Henry doesn't seem to want to go! For example, I took him out this morning and set him in a part of the yard with some dry dirt rather than placing him on the wet grass. After about 10 seconds he went #1. Great! Although I am his mommy and know that he always has to go #2 in the morning but after the #1, he ran to the door to go inside. I grabbed him and put him back in the grass but he ran to the door. Again, I picked him up and put him BACK in the grass and AGAIN he ran back to he door. Against my better judgement,I thought maybe, just maybe he needs a few extra minutes before he is ready for his #2. I brought him in the house and within 3 minutes, he was going on the floor. I caught him squatting and picked him up, not before a few friends fell on the floor. I took him outside but nothing, he just ran back to the door. I need some help or advice on how to get him more comfortable with the wet ground because this has GOT to stop. He has been so good with learning to go outside. Suggestions?! |
My babies are the same way....the will go on the driveway in morining ..lol..but at least it's outside. ha! |
This is the main reason my female Tessie is 100% potty pad trained. she hates to get her feet wet so I just had to give in, also she would not potty if she was on the leash because she does not like for me to see her potty. My other 3 will potty on pads or go outside. Henry is still very young and it takes a lot of time and patience to potty train. |
My Ty did the same thing when he was a puppy! Took him a bit but I started rewarding him with liver treats and that worked. |

mine doesnt like to be watched either. if i see him mid-poo, he will stop and carry on later when i have left. but on the other hand, outside he doesnt care. he just doesnt like to be seen inside. why would they not like to be seen? |
He's still very young so has a long way to go! I would just keep doing what you are doing. He will get used to the wet dew ;) He can suck it up... hehe. It will just take more time and patience! |
Ian is like that also! He won't go in the back, but if you get out his harness and leash, he heads for the door...even in the rain! Go figure!!! |

I have the same theory as long as it is outside who cares. |
Zoey is a wee wee pad girl. She will go outside if we are outside but she will go on the pad anytime. It has been a life saver for me when the weather is bad or I have to leave her for several hours. Cherie |

Mine are also pee pad trained....in the house, they will use the pads....if it is wet outside, I will let them run to the garage, where I will put down a pee pad, which they will use...the garage is their play area when it is raining outside (I will back my car out and they have run of the entire space) or if it has rained and it is too wet to go play outside, we all go to the garage....I have a chair out there, a TV, toys for the garage, and we just sit out there and play....they run like maniacs and have a ball, stay clean and dry, and I am loving it! When it is dry outside, they go outside and do potty. |
morgan is the same way/ he hates the wet grass in the morning// I do have a puppy pad laid down and he will go on that |
welcome to the stubborn world of yorkies haha |

He just doesn't like change and probably learned to poop in the dry grass or dirt from the beginning, now here is something different. Leash him if you must & don't permit him to leave the dewy grass until he has gone on it. Be the soul of patience at this point & don't get perturbed that he endlessly will try to leave the area or just lie down. Walk him around a little bit, then back to his potty spot. Be prepared for a long wait the first time & maybe the second so take a little plastic stool or blanket to sit on or just stand patiently. Patiently. Patiently. Patiently. You have to gently show him the dew is not so bad & after he's been in it a few times, he will desensitize to it & go just like normal. If you prefer not to leash, just prevent him from going to the back door with your hands, or, each time he does, get him & take him back to his potty spot, showing NO signs of frustration - just matter of fact attitude. Mommy is teaching baby - it is very repetitive until they learn every trip to the back door to get away from the dew only results in a trip back to the dew. Or, give in. It's as simple as how badly you want to teach him that change is something he must learn to accept & deal with, even if he doesn't really like it, or you can accede to his wishes & find another way to allow him to poop when it is dewy. |
One of my friends puts a potty pad on the grass when she's house training puppies to help them figure out the transition. |
