Training for hospice visiting Bentley and I are finally ready to start visiting a couple of hospice patients in our area. We train in two weeks with a local hospice care group and then find out who our new friend will be. He is sooo excited to go out and meet new friends he just wags his tail when I say "Bentley, do you wanna go visit?" Wish us luck that we'll mesh well with whomever we visit and they grow close and love Bentley as much as I do. We want to bring joy, happiness, and hope in Christ's love to all we meet and help them to feel at home and not so alone when Bentley is their friend. :p Say a prayer that we will Bless them in Christ's name. |

Delta Society - Improving lives through Therapy, Service & Companion animals Go online and find a training class and team evaluation nearest you. We got registered with Delta but there are other programs out there besides just them. We chose them because they were a nationally known therapy dogs program. We first got Bentley through his CGC (Canine Good Citizenship) with the AKC. When we had been tested for that by a local dog trainer and passed then we started home schooling and training for the evaluations for delta. I bought the training manual from their website, read it cover to cover and worked hard with Bentley to train him. We then took the evaluations and passed and submitted our application and paperwork and got accepted. We are now registered for I think 2-3 years with them and insured too. I would just check on there for the training class for new pet partners teams and also see if you can find an affiliate group to get involved with. Good Luck it's super fun and sooo rewarding. |

That is so great! That's kind of what I want to do with Paisley. I would like to go into the hospital for visits though. The Good Samaritan is building a big new hospital about 30 minutes from where we live and they're building a big children's wing. There's no "therapy dog" organizations in our area but I'd like to start some obedience training now and hopefully continue on and by the time Paisley is old enough (two years) I can get her certified for therapy visits. I think it's GREAT that you're doing hospice visits! I know God will bless you as you go and it will bless the one's you visit. |

Rachel, I think it is wonderful that you and Bentley are doing this for hospice patients. :) |

so we are trained, but due to pregnancy i haven't been able to do my TB test and haven't been able to go into places that may contain contagious illness so i've been putting this on standby until after i've had the baby and had time to get him well adjusted and vacinated first. then i'm hopefully going to start the hospice part of this. i need to email my mentor about doing the READ program now that school has started instead of hospice for the time being. |

Is the READ program working with kids? |

This is so awesome. I would love to do this with my babies.Going to check into this. Did you visit a local school about the read program? |

i'm still learning about the READ program but I do know that it takes another special course which of course costs more money and i'm limited on that at the moment with a new baby coming. i also still work full time so until i'm able to be home i don't fit into the schedule they needed. so pretty well hospice and READ are on hold until after the baby comes and then i'm going to be home more and can go out and do them. |
