Training for CDX or Open Level Competition Well I thought I'd post here and keep and ongoing record per say, of our training progress towards CDX, or Open level. We hope to be ready to compete at our Nationals at Purina Farms at Gray Summitt Missouri held in mid September. Last summer we trained too hard and Magic's back started acting up (again) and we pulled him from the competition; this year I/we hope to be a little smarter. Currently I am figuring out how I can configure some jumps (that would be portable) that I could set in the water, so Magic can jump from water over the jump into water; retreive dumbbell and back to me again. Today we swam first, and Magic was a very bad boy, not wanting to heel, just trying to keep on pulling towards the water. Finally I allowed him to go to water and he had a grand time of swimming in Lake Ontario. Gawd that water is very cold. Would freeze your patoosh off; but he adores it. Next came official training at my house. I got back with a wet dog, rewrapped RAzz, had lunch, made training treats up, set out leashes and toys. Razz was first we are working on basic obedience and focus. Well lets just say he is marginally better than last wk;) My homework, sit/down, focus; sit/down reward focus, repeat ad infinitum. I think my boy has ADD:D Of course you all know it's not his fault, but the trainer's aka Moi! Magic once again aced (for the most part all the skills we practiced). He had a fault on retreive once, he broke before being released to fetch. Also front sit for some reason has gotten a bit wonky this week (my suspicion is hubby took him out on Sunday and did some training with him), urgha wish he would not do that as he doesn't reward correctly, doesn't correct fronts, uses different commands etc.... We have had a number of discussions about it, but what can I say he is a Man; and will do what he wants. We are trying to perfect heel, and Magic had two crooked sits on the heel command; so some homework is to work heel by curbside to correct side sits. His focus and heel off lead was very good. Drop on recall; needs pretty much a lot of work; as he likes to travel a bit prior to dropping. Homework is to work this on lead close in. Signal work: This is signs only no verbals pretty good. Couple of misses on long distance down and then up to sit. Very good on front signalling, as well as heel off lead. This work is for the top obedience title of utility. We garnered a bit of an audience. My neighbours came out to watch the training:) Next wk if they do, I shall ask them to examine Magic on stand for examination as he is pretty well used to Ilona doing it. Summary my trainer Ilona was very pleased with Magic's performance, and well what can I say maybe a C- with Razz's:( What can I say but training with your pups is just grand. You see some progress, you get so close with your pups, and success even those little teeney weeney successes makes you happy. |
Cool thread.... how often do you train? Lol the MAN thing! |

Razz suffers from distractions, and that is my fault, as I have trained him most often in the home, due to some health issues I have had over the past nine months or so. |

When you have your new computer and have the time, I'd love to continue to read this thread. I always love hearing about your training, but having it to read is really great. I hope you are able to have some great outings with your special family this weekend. I love the time, love, and bond that you share with them, and the training only strengthens your relationship with them. Magic, Zoey, Razzle, and Karma have a very wonderful mom. You are blessed to have each other. |
Cali and I have just recently really gotten into obedience training and our instructor says she is doing really well and maybe ready for the September trial....BUT she absolutely will not sit straight! She kicks her butt out away from me so she can look up and see me. It is good that she watches me, but if I can't find a fix for this we are doomed. Love following your progress. You guys are my inspiration. |

Well good luck finding one... I miss your posts! Hugs, |

Is Cali a Yorkie? Actually don't think it matters so much what kind of breed you have. Here is how my trainer taught me about this problem; Magic did have that problem. Use a curb on of course your left. Reward for straight sits, ignore crooked sits, discipline no sits. The curb gives the idea if they kick their butt out they meet the curb. Alternatively you can use little garden fencing etc. For small dogs like Yorkies the looking up and the body adjustment to make it easy to do so is a problem. Try the above. Razz still doesn't have a good heel. Even still the crooked sits are I think .5 mark deduction for each crooked sit. How is she on her front's? ie come command and to sit in front of you? |
Kelso Obedience Well the pups had a grand time but obedient they were not. Magic: Drop on recall on lead close in we have a winner today. Yeah! Heel off lead was sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. He kept on trying to herd me to the water! Front recall was executed twice perfectly; then he took off to the water, and stood in it looking at me  BAck out we go. LOng sit was good for five minutes, long down practised after long sit, yup you guessed it he broke it after 3 minutes to .....>>>>>>> back to the water. Then when I called him to return he wouldn't!!!. First time ever. He went up to some folks who were throwing the ball for their labs, and literally begged them to throw a toy in the water for him. The brat!. What's more the folks obliged and then complimented me on what a lovely dog he is...urghaaa... My boy is a fast learner, and despite playing in the water with him for one hour, he was in a down stay; and I went to the water with Razzle, and next I knew he was up and asking another person to throw a toy for him. He got obliged, again. All told over the day he had 6 different people throwing toys in the water for him. Sigh...... Razzle is loving swimming, and retreives the toy from the water. However he insists on running past me and around a bit before he brings the toy mostly back to me and then drops it!. Focus on me was no problem today. But barking was!. Sit stay was a total write off:( But both the boys got lots of admiration. They just have some much joie de vivre, everyone smiles to see them play and swim in the water. Zoey my greatest challenge is still not swimming. She is still aggressively going up to strange dogs. I'm not even sure it is aggression per say; she is blindingly fast, and runs up so quickly to a strange dog with her head down, that they back away really fast and maybe yelp from surprise. I do know she hasn't nipped them, because I have her on lead all the time, and I am pretty fast too with leash correction. She did okay with basic obedience commands, but is at a total loss for retreive when ppl and dogs are around. She has no focus then or interest in retreiving. Sighh.... |
I'm sorry they weren't obedient for you, Gail. Still, I couldn't help but smile reading this. Your enthusiasm, dedication, and love of all of your furbabies always warms my heart. I have complete faith in you and your pups that you will accomplish your goals and also have a great time trying. I love reading about your training! |
Sibbald's Point Provincial Park - Train and Fun in Water Well Ilona, Dave and I and 2 of our three dogs, and four of Ilona' Yorkies all went for swimming and some training today. What a glorious hot day we had...perfect for swimming. Lake Simcoe was just the right temperature and the water was so clear and clean. I quickly reviewed our videos, Dave was on videoing, and he was pretty chary on getting water shots, and the obedience video he got was basically the return of me on the long sit...y a w nnnnnnnnnn. We had a grand time; Razz is swimming like a fish and he loves loves loves his no high flotation water toy. Magic likes to jump over the waves, and was swimming very well today too. Ilona feels we will do fine at obedience competition in like 2wks or so, just to warm up Magic first.! Magic was a little wide on heel off lead, a sloppy front return on retrieve over high jump, crowded me on one part of figure eight. But focus very good, turn around and right turns are great. So homework is figure eights, figure eights, sit at front recall/retreives, and more regular heel work. If you have not yet gotten the idea that heeling is the most practised skill, and the most difficult, I've not been xplaining well:D Razzle: he made it to a sit/stay for one minute ..... once;) Front recall: If you dont count stopping enroute to say hi to ppl, or to water the tree, he did make it back to me about 90% of the time:) We did stop on the way home for some fresh picked corn on the cob, can't wait to taste it tonight! As soon as I get the videos uploaded I'll post them. |
I always love to read your posts about your babies. Your stories are always so fascinating and exciting for me, and they always truly move me because of your love and dedication to all four of your furbabies. I have learned so much from your wisdom, guidance, and friendship. Your enthusiasm is really contagious, and I can't wait to follow the results of how Razzle and Magic do during their upcoming competitions and also their dock diving. You are doing such an outstanding job with your babies. I'm sure they enjoy working hard for you because they know how much you love them. The weather is gorgeous where I live today. I hope it is also beautiful for you and that you get in some swimming today with your pups. |
