Agility Provincial Competition Wow is all I can say, hubby and I went today for a few hours to the provincinal competition here in Ontario. It was a great park, a very big event they must have had about eight agility rings set up, a huge leash free park area, camping, vendors, etc, etc. I was quite simply amazed at all the different dogs I saw, and how they were working through the different skills. Unfortunately I didn't see any Yorkies there:( We took Magic and Razz with us, and well my nutso Razz was a total spaz. If he wasn't barking, he was leaping, at ppl, at dogs, and had absolutely no focus on me. We took about 40 minutes to walk back to the car, because he wouldn't stop pulling on the lead. Gosh, I thought we had a bit of a breakthrough because he'd been okay/obedient, at pet stores, and on our busy street walks; boy was I wrong!. I guess this venue was the absolute maximum distraction, dogs barking, dogs working, dogs walking, ppl everywhere, and he wanted to do it all; except focus on me! On the plus side, there were good vendors there, and I was able to pick up a cooling coat for Razz. :) Magic had a blast; and he was very well mannered and obedient. Gawd help me but I feel I will go totally grey before I train Razz to Magic's level of obedience:( |
Sounds like a great event! Sorry to hear Razz was being a stinker ;) Wow, I hope they have something like that around here! Sounds awesome :) |

Here is the link to the Canadian Association:AAC Regional Championships/Dates/Locations Brit question for you (and I will ask Ilona when we train on Wed), but Razz has that excited barking gene, in the house I can control it ( I vary the commands), and sometimes I just have to pick him up to settle him a firm hold close into my chest and I carry him away from it is usually the front window. Yesterday I tried verbal commands, hush/quiet, come (he would come but not stop the barking!), chin beard hold, nothing would work consistently or for very long. He is much better when he is in the agility ring with me, he would still bark but then stop when he had his turn and stay quiet for some time and of course start up again when it was close to his turn again. (ie next in line to do the course and we are waiting for the dog ahead to complete their run. Do you have any other suggestions/techniques that have worked for you? He is very stubborn, much more so then I remember Magic to be. Magic was stubborn too but in a different way; Magic always wanted to work, he just would try to put his foot down and choose what he wished to work at. Now having wrote this, dang gone it, I just remembered whilst I brought treats, I didn't bring one of his fav toys with us. I will remember that next time. Anyhoo if you have any other ideas would appreciate them. |
To be honest, I have never really had to deal with this issue w/ Jackson personally. He's pretty laid back when we are out in public and could care less about what's going on around him... we do lots of dog events around here (whenever we find them) and he's luckily really good in crowds, don't think he's ever barked really. Now when we visit my dads house, I get that spazzy side of him... lol... I think it's because my dads dogs are also barkers, and all the excitement of the pool, the cats, the yard, the dogs wandering around by the farm, the four wheelers, etc... luckily, I just have to say his name and he knows he will get a treat if he comes to me. I still have yet to been able to stop him from barking hysterically whenever the side door opens though! :( Gosh his bark is so high pitched and annoying, lol. There is a YouTube channel that had some great videos on calming exercises... let me see if I can find them. |
