I was also told by an obedience trainer to use a mini pinch collar because Macy would not walk beside me no matter what we did. I asked her breeder, my vet and another trainer and they all said the mini pinch collar would not hurt her if used properly. Even though it was against my better judgement I bought a mini pinch collar and used it on her once under the supervision of the trainer. After one lesson she now walks beside me, not in front of me pulling and tugging. I am still not comfortable with what I did but it worked. The pinch collar has mini prongs on it and doesn't work exactly like the choke collar. We have graduated onto agility now. I know 99.9% of people in this forum are against anything but a harness as I was. |
I was told about the pinch. I do have one but have been afraid to use it. Thanks for the info. |

I personally prefer using treats or a toy to lure them into the correct position, but I certainly don't fault your choice. |

I definitely would not use a mini pinch collar without a trainer that knew what they were doing right beside me. I used it once and it is now in the bottom of a basket with all of her bows. I felt terrible when I put it on her but she had a different attitude when I slipped it on. The trainer was very gentle and had a lot of experience with Yorkies and other toy breeds. Macy knew there was something different going on and she walked beside me without tugging on the leash once and has never tugged on the leash since. Would I suggest everyone go out and buy a pinch collar? Absolutely not, I still am not sold on them even though Macy had great results. |
I do trust my trainer. She is fantasic but I am not sure I am sold on those pinch collars. I do realize that used correctly they can be a good tool. But my little girl is 3 lbs and I just worry about her getting hurt. |
I would go with your instinct. Don't let anyone talk you into anything you don't feel comfortable doing. Macy was a wild woman....she would not walk with me no matter what we tried. After two months of trying everything the trainer suggested the pinch collar as a last resort. That is the only reason I tried it. I ordered a mini collar from J and J Supply made for toy breeds which didn't have a lot of prongs on it and they were tiny. Macy weights 5 lbs. |
