Jackson's 6th week of agility Wow! I can't believe it's been SIX weeks already. I kind of didn't make a new thread after week 3, but there's some updates in those old threads. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/agi...y-w-video.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/agi...k-agility.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/agi...p-agility.html Anyways, today went GREAT!:thumbup: We started the class right off the bat with off leash exercises. She had a mini course set up... so it was: table, dogwalk, 4 jumps, a-frame, tire jump, then end it back on the table. Jackson did fabulous all 3 times, except his second run was a little iffy.... he got distracted by all the smells on the ground, LOL. Oh terriers. But he did great. I'm just totally amazed with how well he's doing off leash with listening and paying attention and staying right by my side. I think this class is going to help us greatly with his focus and recall in general. Then all the dogs got distracted by a ton of dogs barking loudly in the kennels (the agility field is located at a boarding facility) so we had to give all the dogs a little break as they were ALL getting worked up. We practiced the teeter yet again, this time we let it "drop" a little more by itself, still without slamming though (the trainer would guide it down). We've now officially been introduced to ALL the equipment but have not yet worked on the weave poles very much? I'm kind of glad I had already semi- self taught Jackson those... I'm disappointed she didn't go over those more, but maybe next class. We've still got 2 weeks. Anndddd.... next week is PICTURE DAY! Ha. Yay! She said they have someone coming to take photos. The trainer's assistant also volunteered to take some pictures with my camera so I'm going to bring it next week. So atleast I'll get some good Jackson agility pictures before class ends! I really can't believe we've only got 2 classes left. I'm definitely gonna miss it- it's been fun for Jackson and I. There's an intermediate obedience class starting in January I may consider joining, just for fun mainly. We'll see. :) Thanks for reading. :D:D |
OMG, I forgot the best part, hehe. The trainer did a little 'game' where we could earn a total of 4 points. She would tell us what piece of equiptment to use and if the dog 'passed' they would get 1 point per what she told us to do. If they 'passed' all 3, we got a chance to get a 4th point by doing the whole course off-leash... Jackson was the only one who got his 4th point! Yay... so he got a toy as his prize! LOL. |
I can't wait to see more video of Jackson! I can tell you, Liz didn't pick it up nearly as fast as Jackson is. She couldn't do all the equipment at the end of her first six week course. |
Wow 6 weeks already. Jackson is amazing can't wait to see the pics:) |
Thanks guys! I was totally excited like a big dork when the trainer announced "next week is picture day!" LOL. |
That is great Brit! I'm so glad you're both enjoying it. I think it's a wonderful thing to do for Jackson, too.:) |
how cute! can't wait to see the videos. Can I ask how big he is and when is the right "age" to start these classes? I'm wondering if my dogs are too small to take agility classes. |

Lizzy is six and a half pounds, if that helps. There is a woman from FL that I had seen at trials a fews years ago, and she had very small yorkies. They jumped in the eight inch class too, I think, which is what Lizzy jumps. There's another thread on here, "Lizzzy in Agility Class" that has a link to a video if you want to see how big she is. |

They are supposed to be a minimum of 1 year of age to participate. :) I've seen some smaller dogs doing agility though! (Like Lizzie^) |
I just saw both Lizzy and Jacksons videos Sooo cute! They are very talented :) |

Thank you from Lizzy, I happen to think yorkies are pretty darn cute doing agility. :D I started Lizzy in agility at a year and a half. In January, she will have been in classes for two years. She is trial ready except for the weave poles, which I've just dragged my heals training. I just started her on the 2 X 2 method and man, it works! I started my IG puppy, who just turned one Nov 3rd. She is on her third six week class. She will be in the 16" class in AKC and the 22" class in USDAA, but I've been training her on 8" and 12" jumps, which is really nothing for her. |
