Baxter and Agility Baxter is our Teapot (11 lbs) and I think he would have so much fun with Agility training. My question is are there DVD's for training that would help me teach him? Where do you buy things for tricks, jumping etc. I found a place in my area that does training, just wondering if I can do some of it on my own. He is a smart boy, I think he would pick up quickly. |
Let me know what you find. Lola is very active and would be perfect for agility. This girl can jump like no other. |
Aw, I think Baxter would have a wonderful time with agility and so will you. :) There are plenty of people out there that do agility on their own for fun but if you are thinking about taking classes, you definity will be doing alot of ongoing training at home. My favorite online agility store is cleanrun.com. Be warned! It can get addictive... you'll be scouring online on how to build your own equipment. If this happens.... homedepot.com for pvc pipes, wood and saw. :D:D |
Agility is awesome! I can't wait 'til I can afford a class for Jackson. He's a jumper, has great balance and is very agile, and I just know he would love it. Baxter will most likely love it as well!! Hopefully next summer, or this fall. I bought him weave poles on amazon.com from AKC junior line, they were around $20, I think. I also got a jump for a little under $15. They're all just PVC poles. But they work well :) |
I have some equipment from the AKC junior line also, I got it really cheap when Toys R Us was discontinuing the line... recently I saw some at TJ Maxx also. You can play around with equipment at home if you are doing it just for fun. I think if you plan to run in real trials or anything, you should start with a class so that you know you are doing it the right way. I was only using it for fun, playing with the jumps and stuff, just to give the kiddos something different to do rather then just run around outside. I never planned to do anything more with it, so the cheapo equipment I find is perfect for me. I paid 7.99 each for a couple of bar jumps and a tire jump. I have also seen weaves and tunnels. |
Dana, on Murphy Rd at the Murphy Vet Hospital they have a huge field and I see them practicing almost every day. Good Luck... |

Do you have a Ross, Marshalls, or one of those kinds of stores? Priscilla (Capt Noonie) bought the jumping poles at Marshalls (I think) and I got one at Ross, both were under $10 both are the AKC brand. I'm going to go back and get the tunnel and the weave poles. :) |

www.affordableagility.com They have a sale page www.cleanrun.com amazing website with all kinds of information, including schools in your area, all kinds of stuff, books, videos, monthly magazine, discussion groups, agility equipment plans, seminars and event listings www.sitstay.com more great stuff, including books and videos I have gotten some really cheap stuff just at agility trials. Like three jumps for $15, a winged jump for $20 or $25. Also, some of the equipment websites have snap on jump cups which makes it really easy to make your own jumps. I taught Lizzy to jump in my hallway. I set up a jump, threw a cookie on the other side, and said "jump" when she went over the jump. Once on the other side, I held a cookie out and said "jump." Then I added a second jump once she understood the word jump. Since YTs have such a short stride, you don't have to put jumps very far apart. Speed counts in agility. You have to get through a set course within a standard course time. Course maps are given the morning of the trial and you find out the time during the judge's briefing, usually. So, you really want a happy little dog who runs fast! Placements are determined by time, and any faults add to the time. Liz is pretty quick, but she is going to be in the 8 inch class and their aren't many dogs running in that class. I envy you having a larger YT because the 12 inch class is pretty good sized at most trials. I think our little dogs can really give the JRTs, Corgis, Pappillions and Shelties a run for their money! They are so cute, too, when they run. |
