N.I agility?? i would love to get my girls into agility, but have no idea where to start (as much as i love buying stuff for them, i can't afford to take out a morgage for an agility set (although i did get a weave)! can you start the n.i ones as a complete beginner, or does the dog have to have a rough idea of whats going on? also, is 1.5kgs too small to do agility; shes the fastest, highest jumping dog i've ever seen!! i think she'd make an amazing height dog for flyball!! lol any thoughts? |
I don't know what N.I. agility is, but I'm just now barely starting to get into agility as well. My boy is larger at 12lbs but I've seen some small yorkies doing agility! I bought AKC Junior equipment from amazon.com, but so far only have weave poles and a "tire" jump. You can also get a pretty cheap set from entirelypets.com (I think it's about $47). But of course the equipment isn't the greatest quality or anything. Also, I know it's possible to make your own with buying PVC poles from a hardware store, or improvising using logs, sticks, benches, trees etc. I'm hoping to take an agility class this summer-excited! :) |
cool! i might give making the stuff myself a go!!! i might actually try making the hoop and pole jumps over the next few days... if the rain ever stops!! sorry, i meant to explain the abreviation... n.i is northern ireland... i always forget that we aren't a country people talk about in day to day life!! lol! i'm, sure its funny watchin yorkies in comparison to all the other dogs at the class!! |
I have been doing agility with my little girl for about a year and a half. She is not a tiny girl, about 5 1/2 pounds. I don't see any reason why a littler one could not do it. They set the jumps according to the size of the dog. By the way, she just loves it, but will be taking a break from it now as she is pregnant, but she did go until she was 5 weeks. I made the equipment that I use at home out of PVC pipe. When she started with a beginner class, she had never done any agility before, they taught us to use all the equipment. Audrey |

You can make EVERYTHING you need for way cheaper than what it costs to buy. My boyfriend made the weaves for around 20 bucks the jumps for around 5 bucks each the teeter for around 15 and we bought a tunnel at toys r us for 25 bucks you can add a sheet to that for the collapsed tunnel and for the tire we just use one of those blow up water toy tubes. Baileys class was cancelled yesterday so we went out in our front yard and set up all of our homemade stuff and had a blast! I really need to get a video on here! As for the size, When Bailey started she was just below 3 lbs we had to work to get her just above the 3lb mark. In order to make a standard competition tetter move you have to be 3lbs. Good luck! thanks so much everyone for the advise... i'm going to go to b&q and toys r us tomorrow to get some stuff to make it all!! i cant wait! my dads getting more enthusiastic about helping make the stuff than i am! lol! the worst of it is, if it wasnt for her size, she Could be one of the best! she can jump onto the dining room table without a run at it- i would have difficulties in climing on! are the minor competitions (like local ones) as strict about size as the profesional comps? |
