[News] Sweden Opens First-ever Cinema for Dogs Sweden has opened its first-ever cinema for dogs so that pet pooches can accompany their owners to the movies. The initiative is part of the 2011 Swedish Pet Fair held in Stockholm's Kistamässan in the hub of Sweden's telecommunications and IT industry. "To our knowledge, this is the first time that dogs have been allowed to attend a movie screening. Of course, all pets are welcome," Gerd Lindén, project manager at the Pet Fair, said in a statement last month. "As long as it is the family's best friend, we promise not to discriminate against moviegoers and welcome both reptiles as well as fish in aquariums," he added. The dog-friendly movie theatre kicked off on Thursday afternoon at 1pm with a screening of the film Marmaduke, which features a Great Dane in the lead role and was released last year. The dog cinema is open throughout the Pet Fair, which began on Thursday and ends on Sunday. Screenings of the film are at 12.30pm and 3pm every day. The Pet Fair is open from 10am to 6pm. Tickets for the dog cinema are included in the admission price to the fair and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The cinema seats about 200 people and 200 dogs. Other pets are welcome, but visitors are asked to pre-register pets with special needs. "A pet is a family affair and for dog and pet owners, it is obvious that they must find things to do together," said Jenny Dybeck Strömbäck, marketing manager at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in Scandinavia. "Often, this means that one may be excluded from many fun activities, such as going to theatres, museums or restaurants. We are changing that now," she added. The film is open from all ages, including viewers with four legs. The cinema will not sell popcorn or soft drinks as usual, but owners can buy dog biscuits and treats for their four-legged friends. The dog cinema is a collaboration between the Pet Fair and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, the studio behind Marmaduke. The film is based on a popular American comic strip from the 1950s about an unusually large Great Dane. The Swedish premiere of the film on Blu-ray and DVD is on Wednesday. According to an American Kennel club survey, 87 percent of all pet owners say their pets watch TV. Research has also shown that dogs, as well as certain other animals, can actually watch TV. They do not perceive the image as humans do, but can react to certain elements. Experiments show also that dogs have the ability to see shades of colour and not just in black and white. Just when I thought I'd heard it all!! |
I'm moving! Ha ha. Personally, I think it's pretty cool. I'd love to take my puppy to the movies with me. |
this is great!! |
WOW! Muffin and Boomer would eat all the popcorn though. |
Cinema for Dogs I wish the USA would take a tip from Sweden. It would work quite well. I sneak my 1 lb yorkie in often. He sleeps the entire time.:animal-pa |
I wish theaters would allow dogs to come to the movies, even if they just held special screenings for them, or only allowed dogs small enough to sit on your lap. I took Armani to the movies once, he slept on my lap the whole time and was a perfect angel. |
Swedish Cenema, WOW!! That's great! I hope the U.S. picks up on the news & does the same thing here. They need to open up more public places to pets. They're just as much a part of the family as anybody else, sometimes more. My friend said she took her little puppy to the movie with her once in her purse because he was so little & new. He was sound asleep untill he heard the man in the next seat rattling a popcorn bag as the smell leaked out & he came out of her bag. lol She told all the people around that he was just a baby & she couldn't leave him @ home alone. No one said a word to management. I would be afraid to take the chance. Teppi only weighs 3lbs but I don't see her staying in a bag, the smell of food would bring her out, or laying asleep in my lap. She'd want to play with everybody. lol We need more places to take out babies. :heart to Pam & Teppi :yorkiej: |
Okay Okay, this Would be a Hoot. I recall, years ago we used to have a silent theater. Mostly Charlie Champlin movies. There was a big Basset Hound that would attend. All the Time. He was part of the wood work as far as I could tell. Lol Well my little dog, Roxy will always book it into, usually the bedroom if the T.V. is on, no matter where we are at. This behavior leaves me to conclude that my dog dislikes t.v. but then just the other day, I was in the kitchen cooking. I checked on Roxy and there she was curled up on a pillow on the couch watching Rachel Ray :o Last year Roxy showed interest to the Choir that was on t.v. during the Christmas Season. Roxy loves the Angelic tones of Choir music and shows interest in all music of Enya as well. IT seems Roxy enjoys the angelic tones. I think when it comes to outing to doggy friendly venues, Roxy would far better enjoy a doggy restaurant than a movie theater. Great Idea though. I wish that Roxy did like T.V. but clearly she just doesn't. I would think that the theater would be a great social event for the 200+ dogs! Nice. |
I hope this happens for CA soon! hahah I love going to drive-thru movie with my babies :D Family movie time although they don't watch the movie...haha We enjoy cuddling together :p |
I got a visual of Nini (my couch potato/movie addict) at the cinema :D She wouldn't sleep, though. She's the kind that has to yap all through the movie  You, know...warning the good guys about the bad guys ;) I wonder how that would be received by the other movie goers and their human parents and siblings  |
