[News]West Hollywood bans retail sales of dogs and cats The West Hollywood City Council has put an end to sales of dogs and cats in pet stores. In an ordinance that passed unanimously Tuesday night, sales of animals in stores are now prohibited in the city. The ordinance, unanimously approved at its first reading a few weeks ago, is just the latest piece of animal-welfare legislation the city has taken up. In 2003, West Hollywood became the first city in the country to outlaw the declawing of cats. The new law, called the Ordinance Prohibiting the Sale of Dogs and Cats in Companion Animal Stores, is aimed at curtailing puppy mills and easing the conditions endured by animals in the puppy-mill industry, which relies heavily on sales through pet stores, officials said in a statement. "This ordinance represents an important step toward ridding our nation of the cruelty of puppy mills and other commercial assembly-line animal breeders," Councilman Jeffrey Prang said in a statement. "The ordinance not only contributes to the fight against animal cruelty, it also recognizes the enormous cost of pet overpopulation in our society, both fiscal and humanitarian impacts. I urge those seeking pet companionship to consider adoption from municipal shelters and other nonprofit rescue agencies." West Hollywood's ordinance would go into effect March 19. Hurray for W. Hollywood!!! Hope other places follow their lead soon. |
:bravo: How wonderful. Now let's hope and pray this policy carries across the U.S. That certainly is great news to read. Thanks for posting it. |
Yeah! I hope the rest of the country catches on to this! :animal36 |
:thumbup: Great news! I hope this legislation sets a trend throughout the country! |
It only takes one to get the ball rolling, its a start. Hope our goverment sees fit to follow suit. |
I think that W. Hollywood City Coucil should travel to every state and propose that change to every state in the country :) (kidding but it's nice to say) Impressive that something non superficial or financially motivated is coming from Hollywood - (ok - West Hollywood) but still - when CA makes a move - sometimes other states follow ....we can only hope ! Good for them ! |
I'm *so* happy to see this :). On the other hand, this ordinance was passed in a district where there are NO retail sales of pets occurring...so...I wonder how opposed this ordinance was, does anyone have local insight? I guess it would be interesting to see how an ordinance like this would go in a district where there actually *were* Pet Stores selling mill (:() pups. Also...even though I like to see this...the bigger issue, imo, is that we can't just focus on stopping sellers -- we have to focus on educating buyers on why and how one should buy from reputable breeders (if buying a purebred puppy, that is). "How to choose a breeder" and "How to buy a healthy pet" etcetera (or, a shelter, rescue, etc...) and "Why NOT to buy Animals at a Store"...etc.. Seriously, it floors me how so many people still don't really know what a Puppy Mill *is*, let alone the difference btwn buying at a store vs. an indiscriminate breeder they know little about vs. a reputable breeder (and everything in between). |
Thats fantastic news!!! Now I hope more catch on!! |
Such a great step!! I do hope other places follow their lead!!! :):bravo::bravo: |
This is great news. I hope that it catches on. :D |

Got a kick out of your post! |
Hollywood is just a fragment of CA. and I wish Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger would pass that law for the entire state. I think I will write him about it. Maybe each of you in different states could write to your governors and ask them to pass a law prohibiting the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores. Anyone in CA. wanting to write our governor, here is the email address: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger - Interact |
Its about time In las vegas leid animal shelter puts down 25000 dogs a year craigslist is so full of pets that people dont want. I think it should be illegal for any dog without reg paper to be bread and heavy fines to follow the fine money should go to the shelters. This in my opinion would reduce the animal population this ban along with a manditory spay .[/I] |
forgot to add No pets should be sold in pet stores and puppymills should only be allowed a maximum of 20 dogs. And fines should be huge if animals are found negleted yhere. |
