Weird coughing/choking noise at night Lately I hear ferdinand in the middle of the night making this weird choking/coughing noise like he's got a hairball stuck in his throat. The first time I cought him doing it he threw up. Every time I get up and take him out of his crate and give him some water and rub his belly and throat and it goes away. It scares me sometimes because I don't know why he does it. Has anyone else had this problem? Or does anyone know what it could be? |
If it continues, you might want to call the vet. It could be something he's been chewing on that isn't agreeing with him, but then again it might be kennel cough. |
I'm interested in the answer, too. Piccolo did it a few times and I don't know why... |
I think my two are having the same problem! When mine do it, it sounds like they have water in their noses and are trying to clear it and catch their breaths. It really scares me and I'm going to be bringing them to the vet to get it checked out. I'm interested to see if anyone on here knows what the problem might be. |
My pup used to do that too I took her to the vet and they said she had a very mild upper respiratory infection. The vet gave me medicine and it passed. The only difference with my pup is that she wasn't throwing up it only sounded like she was.Good luck:cool: |
Ralphie does it.. I wonder if its allergies?? All my dogs do it.. |
Gucci had the same the same symptoms twice minus the vomiting, I rubbed her belly and throat and she was fine. Next time I go to vet. I will ask them.. |
A very common problem with yorkies is a partially collaped trachea related to their small size. Often the cough sounds like a goose honk type sound. The only way to check is to have an xray of the trachea. It is very common with these little guys. typically it does not pose a problem and just sorta goes with the small breed. |
Ralphie WAS xrayed.. and it is not a collapsed trach in his case.. I do notice if i give him Benedryl, he does not do it for a number of days...... |
I brought both of mine to the vet. She first checked to see if it was kennel cough, but she said it wasn't. She said that it was nothing to worry about and that it should go away soon. But she also said to call her if the symptoms get worse. She also said that some dogs (I don't know if she said only yorkies or just all dogs) if they aren't AKC might have an abnormality that causes them to cough. If the coughing doesn't go away, we will get them checked for that (one is AKC and one is ACA). I would just say to monitor your babies. If you feel like it is getting worse, take them in just to be sure. I know that I am really paranoid about my babies being sick and have brought them to the vet several times only to find that it is nothing. But it is always better to be safe than sorry. |

“Reverse sneezing isn’t really a health problem, but something that dog owners should be aware of as it is very common in toy breeds. It is characterized by honking, hacking or a snorting sounds. It usually happens when a dog is excited or can sometimes happen after drinking, eating, running around, or while pulling on the leash. The dog will usually extend his/her neck while gasping inwards with a distinctive snorting sound, it is reverse sneezing. Usually by gently rubbing the throat of your dog, the spasms will stop after they swallow a couple of times and that’s the end of it. Other dogs respond well by taking them outside for some fresh air. Or you can plug the nose holes forcing the dog to breathe through her mouth and that will usually stop an episode as well. |
You're describing a reverse sneeze. Place two of your fingers over the dog's nostils which forces them to open their mouths and the episode will end. |
