Should we take him to emergency or vet? Hi all. Our dog Jackson is about 3 yrs old and always has been in perfect health. Tonight we noticed while sleeping that his breathing was pretty shallow and fast at times. I woke him up and he seems relatively alert and breathing fine when he is up. He played with me and ate some peanut butter off my finger. He ran up and down the stairs a couple of times. He seemed fine. Then he went back to sleep on my lap and he seems to be breathing shallow and fast again. Are we being paranoid? I wouldn't say he's not getting air. It just seemed to be a different kind of breathing than he normally does. We're now planning to work him into the vet tomorrow if possible. Do you think that's good enough? Or should we take him tonight? I'm jacksonsmama's husband by the way. Thanks for the help. Josh |
I'm curious too. I'd venture to say he's okay but don't want to steer you wrong. I know Alphy's breathing when he's deep sleep is like non existent. I've freaked out many a time. I wake up in the middle of the night and put my hand on him, if I can't feel him breathing I scream Alphy. Couple times I've grabbed him screaming his name while he's rag doll limp and finally he snaps out of it and is like what's your problem lady? I was sleeping. other times it's like he's panting, but I think he's dreaming. |
Gosh, I don't know. Seems odd that he'd be breathing fine when he's under stress (as in activity) but not when he's sleeping. Do you have an emergency number that you can call? We have an animal ER but we can call and get their opinion over the phone (for free). I know that sometimes my pups seem to breathe funny when they are dreaming. |
Welcome, and I'm so sorry he's having a problem with his breathing. I'm not much help here, but it probably wouldn't hurt to call the ER vet. Ours will do a phone consultation and tell you whether or not they think you should bring him in. They also give first aid advice if you need it. Please keep us posted. |
Looks like we posted at the same time. |
Thanks for the feedback. I think we will call the ER. I didn't even think about calling. I'm guessing we're being paranoid. We do the same thing with Jack when we're sleeping. We've both woken up a time or two and freaked out because he was barely breathing and limp. Turns out he's just lazy! :) I guess the fact that he doesn't breath much when he sleeps makes us paranoid this time. And I did think at first that he was dreaming, but it's keeping up a little. I'll call the ER and see if they'll help. I'll keep you posted. |

One of my "paranoid" things is feeling an irregular heartbeat when they're sleeping. I can make it seem too fast or too slow or intermediate if I concentrate hard enough. Here's hoping you're paranoid!! :) |
I guess I'm paranoid too....I have a stethescope on my nightstand and will use it any time in the night anyone sounds funny! Luckily they have always been dreaming! |
Oh and welcome to YT!!! Hope it's just a dream!:) |
Oh goodness! I hope your baby is ok! Mine do that sometimes when they are sleeping really good but I'm a panicker so I would call the Emergency vet and see what they say! Let us know what you find out!!:) |

Just a quick update....we worked Jackson into the vet's schedule today at 3pm. Right now he's been sleeping by me so I can keep an eye on him. I'm thinking it may be a cold (do dogs get colds?!) due to the snow Texas has been having lately. Who knows? I'll keep yall posted. Thanks for the well wishes. |
Please keep us posted. |
Hope Jackson's ok....could you even get to the vet at 3 with all of the snow? |
Hope Jackson is doing well. |
