Diatomaceous Earth for Fleas This summer/fall we have been having a huge problem with fleas. We have never had a flea before, but for some reason, this year it was horrible! I did everything possible to get rid of them... flea treatment, flea baths, constant cleaning, constantly checking the pups and killing the fleas I could catch... but they continued to stick around. I went to our local pet store and asked about what else I could do. They said they did not recommend flea collars because of the amount of chemicals in them, but that they did recommend using a powder called diatomaceous earth. I had never heard of this before, but we bought it... brought it home and researched it before using it on the pups. The only warnings were to not breath it in, so I was careful and rubbed it on the dog and cats' coats. I have not seen a single flea since. I cannot believe it! The fleas are gone, and all it took was a little powder. I put a little on their bedding too to ensure it kills them all, and I am so happy! If anyone is having problems with fleas, I would definitely using diatomaceous earth. But, make sure you buy the pet type and not the type for pools. This is the type I bought. I paid $11.99 at my local pet store, so this is a great price: Amazon.com: Lumino Organic Diatomaceous Earth For... |
I been using human grade DE for years, I never had a problem with fleas, flys or any other pest, I also have it apply to my yard once a month in the hot months, as long as you dont inhale it is ok to use it..my hubby worked in NYC and it was a horrible bed bug problem in the city, I never had a problem in my home, DE kills those buggers too... :) |
I'm glad to see your review of this product. I had been looking for a more natural way to get rid of fleas an have read about Diatomaceous earth. It is entirely natural and comes from the earth. It sounded too good to be true. Some people feed it to their pets. I wondered if it worked as well as they say. I do use Advantage on my indoor pets but I want something to use on the outside pets as well. They say you can even sprinkle it around the corners of your home and under your furniture to kill fleas. |
I use this year round. When you have breeding females and show dogs you are really limited on what you can use that is safe for pregnant dams and that won't mess up a growing show coat. |
Wow, it's always great to learn something safe that works well too. Maybe you should ask Ann to put this in the library. |
I had flea busters come out and I live on the rainey side of wa, they come to your place and do everything and it is good for a year, but if the de is working then you should be okay. |
This stuff is great!! it's not just good for fleas and ticks. It kills many many pests including mites, roaches, bed bugs, and the list goes on and on. This is why I got to using it though.......my jack russell has stomach problems....we started him on 2 teaspoon a day, those problems are gone!! Chloe had been wormed at the vet 5 times in a 4 month period.....even passed a fecal test saying she was worm free.....well....not true when you see worms in her poop. I was aggravated at all the chemicals I was giving her and she still had worms. I started her on a teaspoon in her food twice a day........in 5 days....she had passed literally 40 to 50 worms in and around her tiny little BM. I saw at least 2 kinds...little spagetti type worms and the little ones that look like rice.....both whip and roundworms. I plan on keeping them both on a daily dose of this for life. I also dust their coats once a week to keep them from being bitten by flies or mosquitos to prevent heartworms. This keeps her flea and tick free as well. She still takes her heartworm pill though just in case. |

I finally got a chance to read this thread and am so glad I did. We haven't had fleas or bugs of any kind for years but if we do get them, now I know what to try that isn't an internal medication or that Advantix stuff that I used when I first got Tibbe. It cause him to scratch the area where I put it as if he were itching so I stopped using it after the 2nd time and we have had no fleas, etc., so I haven't really worried about flea medication. But it is so nice to know about something that is as benign as any of these types treatments and works without fuss. Thanks for the good info to all. |
So glad that i had the chance to read this thread....I have been searching for a good product to use for fleas and now I have found one to try.....thanks to all that posted u guys really just stopped my headache!!! |
I have read about DE but my concern is how are u supposed to use it on their fur and bedding as well as in the home without inhaling in? ? ? ? |
As with any other natural remedy out there, it is not perfectly safe. The food grade usually poses less of a risk, but the dust from neither should be breathed in. It's also an eye and skin irritant. Dusting a coat with it would leave too much room for the pup breathing in dust, imo. And also, unless a dog has intestinal worms, using it as a feed through isn't going to do much of anything. So there is no reason to use it all the time, just when intestinal parasites are present, and even then it is questionable. I would only dust or feed my dogs this type of thing under the supervision of a vet. Carpet seems the best place to use it... Also make sure if you do decide to use it, you get the right kind because some is sharper than others. Breathing in the dust of tiny, sharp particles could make for some angry lungs. I'd have to wonder if it's a good idea to give a mild abrasive orally. It's not good for the skin because of that. I can't imagine the intestines would benefit from it. |
I been using it for years, but as with every product out there you must be careful how is used, applied and ingested. Read all instructions and follow them carefully. that is what I been doing and so far so good..:) I found that parting my dogs hair down her back and applying a small ammount of the powder and brushing it towards the tail , then put a light shirt on for a day or so works wonderful and the powder does not wound up flying every where. For the bedding I try to put it in the seams of the bed and then cover it with their blanket, after a day or so it seems to sink in the fabric. When is applied to my yard my hubby wears a breathing mask, and he dust very close to the floor to prevent a cloud.. with more powder applied at the edge of the fence where the woods are. also around and under the shed.
