[Picture Warning]: Ag Industry Trying to Make Undercover Footage Illegal Link to article {WARNING, link contains disturbing picture of pigs}: Agriculture Industry Pushes To Make Undercover Filming Of Farm Animal Abuse Illegal | TeddyHilton.com Article: Agriculture Industry Pushes To Make Undercover Filming Of Farm Animal Abuse Illegal Iowa's agriculture industry is upset at the repeated releases of secretly filmed videos claiming to show the mistreatment of farm animals. Now the agg industry is pushing legislation that would make it illegal for animal rights activists to produce and distribute such images. Agriculture committees in the Iowa House and Senate have approved a bill that would prohibit such recordings and punish people who take agriculture jobs only to gain access to animals to record their treatment. Proposed penalties? Fines of up to $7,500 and up to five years in prison. "They're trying to intimidate whistleblowers and put a chill on legitimate anti-cruelty investigations. Clearly the industry feels that it has something to hide or it wouldn't be going to these extreme and absurd lengths," said Bradley Miller, national director of the Humane Farming Association. Jeff Kerr, general counsel for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, agrees. He says the Iowa legislation is misguided, at best. "They're trying to criminalize someone being an eye witness to a crime. The people who do the very difficult job of documenting that criminal conduct should be applauded." This bill will only hurt the American public and help the agriculture industry. This bill will only pass if Iowa's Senators give in to bribes or pressure from the industry. |
OMG, don't know what else to say. |
I can't look. I will just believe what you say. |
I can't look either but is there a petition that we can all sign ? If not their sure needs to be one. |

I did go ahead & look but didn't watch the video as I have seen way too many of them. I could not find a petition either but if it passes they can put it through again in a few months & hopefully someone will do a petition then. We'll just have to keep an eye on it to see what happens. |
How sad. It would not surprise me that the fine for the animal advocates is probably greater that the fine for an animal abuser. |

:( <== This is how I feel about it... If there's a petition, I will for sure sign it!! |
The bill passed the House and will now go to the Iowa Senate. Breaking news ? Whistle-blower videos of animal abuse banned by Iowa House - National Animal Policy | Examiner.com I think what's important to remember is that many of these videos are not about about *abuse* at these farms, but rather day-to-day operations. Factory farms have grown exponentially in the last 50 years and bear no resemblance to what most of us would imagine. They offer cheap food due not only to the economics of scale, but also due to government subsidies...to the tune of tens of billions of dollars. On a level playing field, traditional (more humane) farms could compete but don't get the tax breaks and subsidies that corporate farmers get. No wonder the industry is up in arms about efforts to expose them for what they really are. It's a HUGE can of worms. Here's some links that offer a glimpse into the life of the typical chicken, pig and cow on today's large-scale farms. It ain't pretty, but folks need to know the reality of our agriculture 'industry'. Jim, have you seen Food Inc. yet? If not, I'd highly recommend it. It goes into the corporate side of farming, the economics, the power of corporate farming etcetera. It doesn't really show abuse...as it seems the director realizes how this would deter people from viewing the film. |
