Wahl's is a great brand of trimmer.

You'd want to trim a quarter of the way down the ear from the tip on both the front and the back of the ear leather.
I then take scissors and carefully finish the ear by trimming up the edges and around the tip where the trimmer couldn't reach...just be careful, that's all.

Here's a photo for you to see what I mean:
(I actually forgot to trim the tips in the second one, but you at least can see what I mean)
