I use a HAI ceramic straightener. It cost about $100 but has lasted for over 2 years.

It doesn't sound normal if you have to apply extra pressure, there should be even pressure all around. I don't have to apply any pressure to my straightener and my hair is very thick and frizzy.

And katie B...thanks for the curling hair tip! I use your faux lash mascara and I always get compliments!
