My Hoku really likes her crate, I think she feels secure in the small space. But if the space you have next to your bed is small then he'll probably be fine. Plus you can hang your arm down the side of the bed so he can feel you. At first Hoku would whine for me and I'd stick my fingers in her crate so she could lay against them and she'd fall fast asleep.
I would just pick out a couple small toys. I was afraid to take Hoku out to the pet stores when I first got her but I have since and yes, she does like to pick out her toys - LOL!
