I dunno, but I was having the same thing. It's called "threaded" in your options. If you go to UserCP and then to Edit Options, go down to the display mode and check Linear (either oldest or newest first, whatever you prefer) then click *i think* save.
I just did that, my settings weren't changed, but I did it anyway, and it's fine now
