8 hours is a long time for a dog with a little bladder to hold it. I have three puppies ages 9 months, 7 months and 3 months. The 9 and 7 month old can hold it a lot longer than they used to.. but I still take them out about every 2 hours.. I think that's only fair. My littlest goes out every 1/2 hour if she's running around and playing. At night I usually have to take her out once around 3 or 4 am or she'll jump out of bed and pee.

I use an XPEN for all 3 when I'm not home which is a rarity. I can fit TWO dog beds, food, water, and toys and they still have plenty of space to lounge and to play. Emma and Lula can jump out if they really want to, but usually don't if they're home alone.

Just a note.. I used to leave them in the kitchen w/a baby gate and stopped because they were eating all the woodwork... if your pup has any chewing tendancies I wouldn't leave them w/access to the molding... just my opinion.

Good luck!
